I am 1000% in favor of rationing. I know of shooters that are Big time hoarders. They care nothing about fellow shooters, just about themselves. It’s a behavior trait that also manifests itself in other ways in their lives. Frankly they show total disrespect. The shortage we see has been created BY THEM. They strip the supply chain.
YES!! the same guys that moan about only getting one tin are the guys that got 20K caps stored home. shortages of mostly anything are man made. toilet paper craze same thing

I do not fault stores and shops for limiting cap purchases. They are simply doing what they can to at least keep some folks going for a little while. Considering we traditional ML fans are such a tiny fraction of sales to the actual ordinance manufactures of actual black powder and caps, I find it absolutely despicable for anyone to be a scalper. My guess is, most of the scalpers are not even into the trad thing other than to profit. They do not care if some folks cannot shoot their ML due to not finding any caps.

So, what is our options?

Either do a large purchase from some of the online dealers, even if it means having to pay HAZ-MAT. There are occasionally some deals pop up like in a post above where its free HAZ-MAT. Yes its a big hit on the wallet, but at least you can and should stock up on powder and caps anyway. We are living in very scary times in many aspects. Best be stocked up on anything you might think you need now.

Second choice is learn to make your own caps. There's plenty of information out there on this. Yes, it takes some trial and error and some time. But heck, once you get it down pat, you got it and really shouldn't be all that concerned about caps.

We are not allowed to discuss it here but I will state this. Some people make their own BP as well. That's as far as I will take this one.
to me there is hardly any difference between a scalper and a hoarder. both mean empty shelves

I see that at the gun shows. Same caps that Wally World sells and they have them on their tables for $35.00 a tin. These are also the same guys buying the boxes of .410's and selling them for $35 a box. I haven't found any .410's in more than a year. I know there is a walmart associate that when certain items come in like the .410's, he calls his friends and they get the items before anyone else can. He told me he does that.

Have you spoken with the store manager? Most companies take a pretty dim view of that kind of behavior. Especially when there may be liability for Walmart…

I doubt it. Some people shoot more than others. And yes, some people hoard stuff but the guy with 20k caps at home isn’t piddling around with scheels or Walmart.

In one sense, yes. No one should keep hording caps if they are not going to be using them. However, I see scalping much worse myself.

I'm tired of playing the fools game. Instead of belly aching about it, I bypass them both by ordering online even if it means more per tin. I order a lot in one shipment and stock up on what I might need and do not worry about it.

Then there's the self-made cap option, that I have yet to ventured into.

I've never had a problem with Scheels cuz I've never heard of them, till I saw this thread.
From now on I'll never have a problem with them either.

I was at the local Scheels a few weeks ago and they had caps back in stock, with no limit on purchase that I saw.

I do see online it's max qty 1, store pickup only, so the purchase limit could be online only, or it changed between my visit and now. Or I wasn't paying enough attention.

Sad thing that is going on for sure. I got 10 tins but went to 2 dz. chinamart stores in 2 States to get them. I am done with that, as all I am doing is ordering 100 flints for my rock sparkers for hunting.

Natchez shooters Supply has both CCI and Remington caps in the catalogue I received today
Yep. They recently had 1K at a decent discount plus free hazmat. Price was still more than I like to pay, but my ROA wanted to come out and play. Natchez and others have similar sales fairly often. I am glad to have the 1000 caps on hand and only cried about the price for a little while.

Hoarding, Scalping, and ....Being supplied so you can keep on shooting.
Three totally Different things.

Hoarders hoard, have but do not use.
Scalpers cheat people out of money.

The third is someone who knows how much they use over time, don't want to get hit by shortages, they Plan Ahead, Be Prepared.

I am glad the 2020 shortages did not prevent me from shooting, not one single day was I sitting at home bummed out because I had no powder, caps, flints, or ball....AND when others came around who had none but heard I was going shooting - - I Did Not "hoard" - - I Gave them, from my store, what they needed and we enjoyed a fine day out.

Now, yes I have enough caps to keep me shooting for...maybe a year (if I shoot mostly the rifles rather then revolvers) and since I shoot mostly flint I can probably stretch those out even further as I did through 2020-2021...I was down to my LAST 7 CAPS when they finally showed back up...last 7 Individual caps, not tins.
Now my store has been rebuilt to weather another year or abouts drought.

But to Keep that store I either:
Don't shoot untill market dries up again.
Or I shoot when I want and Replace what I shoot.
Thus; pick up 2, 3, 8 tins when I can afford and available.

It's called Living and Playing Smart not hoarding, not scalping.
If it were nit for me then there would have been not one but Five bummed out shooters sitting at home.

Condem me if you want...but we kept the smoke blowing and I can assure you that if I had left ANY of that powder, caps, flint on the shelf back in 2019.... NONE of it would have ended up in YOUR hands anyway...

It is becoming a crisis.

No RWS caps have come into the country for at least 18 months. Back Creek Gun Shop supposedly has an order of 1 million musket caps due last month, but still not in yet. This is only a drop in the bucket though. There are 2,666 N-SSA members. If each only shot 1000 caps a year (my family burns through 4,000 a year), that is 2.7 million needed per year.

Back Creek was limiting people to 1000 caps per person at October 2024 Nationals. They sold out.

The division of MAXAM that made musket caps for Schuetzen has gone out of business.

CCI sees the market as "only black powder hunters" and only does a run of caps twice a year.

I found a guy who had 50,000 RWS musket caps in stock and bought another brick of 5,000. I've got about 8,000 musket caps now. This will last my family about 2 years. I am afraid that when I need to buy another 5,000 they will not be available to buy. When that happens, N-SSA competition stops.

Goex had been looking into acquiring cap making capabilities, but after their recent explosion they have bigger concerns right now.

I don't think this is really a hording or scalping issue. Mostly it's that supply has all but dried up. CCI is it and they don't see the market as big enough to do a lot of manufacturing of caps. Also I suspect the uptick in all the wars around the world have ammo makers going 24/7 making modern military ammunition.

Even lead is getting hard to buy. I used to drop by Sanders Lead in Troy, Alabama and pick up a pig any time I wanted. Then they said I had to buy a whole pallet (2200 pounds). Now they hardly even have pallets of pigs you have to buy a 1-ton block. They told me an ammo maker was buying everything they had.

Lets face the facts ! Any store that stocks, & sells perc. caps & all they have is 10 Tins. They are not serving the public & they are not selling for a profit. They are unloading what they had out of a back store room. I walked in several of those stores & bought what they had on display. I had went for 4-5 years with the 3 Tins I had on hand. I am not going to be held hostage anymore.

Well, at least you can buy caps, here is NSW Australia there are NO caps for sale anywhere. Main importer has had caps on back order for 2 years, our club members are now buying the kits you can get from Sharpshooter Rimfire Reloader to make #11 caps and getting them mailed down here. May be years if ever before we see commercial percussion caps down here.

As far as you know, is anyone investigating the holdup at the border. Is RWS still manufacturing caps but unable for one reason or another able to export into the United States?

Quick follow up, I decide to pop over to the local Scheels tonight and they had #10, #11, and Musket (All CCI).
I bought 2 each #10 and #11, they didn't have a purchase limit in person, at least at this location. When I left there were 6 tins of #11 and 10 tins of #10 still there. I didn't count the musket caps since I have 9 tins still at home. Now up to 9 tins #10s and 6 tins #11s.

Not a lot for some of you, but I don't shoot super often the last couple years. So if you're in the area and need caps, stop at Scheels.

Sounds good.
I never got over ours, turned out what my wife needs is not in stock (online order only).
Maybe the online is to scare scoundrels off....
I will swing by ours in a week when I go to the VA, if they are still in stock.

I was told long ago, by who I can not recall but it must be true as I heard since from others;
A serious shooter should always have 3,000 rounds of each caliber he own a firearm.
It breaks down as:
1,000 for plinkin and target shooting.
1,000 set back Just in Case the world goes sideways and you need it to put food on the table and self defense.
The 3rd thousand is so that while the world is sideways you have some to practice and keep your skills sharp.

Now this don't mean you get 3,000 and when your down to just one or two boxes left; you put 2,000 in back and when your down to couple boxes of the first thousand you go get another thousand, put that in the back and move a thousand of the old up front (rotate your stock).

So the way I figure it, the same would hold true for muzzleloaders: always have 3,000 shots worth of powder, shot, flint, and caps....
Well, to be truthful I don't have room for 3,000 of everything I own, so I work on a 2,000 rule - - perhaps if and when the world goes sideways I may not make, fall just a little shy of surviving it through, BUT I will survive another year or two of Pandemic, and be able to help a few friends along too.

To some folks, your numbers would make sense and to others it would be considering hoarding. Depends on what you want personally.

It all depends on what you personal inventory level is.

My mentor said if you shoot 1 buy 2,if you shoot 2 buy 4, etc.
