    Lyman quality?

I had a 54 Lyman Deerstalker about 4 years ago, wish I still had it. Never had any problems with it. It shot 1" groups at 100 yards no problem. I now have a 54 Trade rifle and the fit and finish is just as good on it as the deerstalker. Accuracy has yet to be determined but I have no doubts...

    54 round ball twist

Well I got that 54 Trade Rifle and have been playing around with it, it is a 1:48 twist. Our pit is 75 yards deep so for now thats the shooting distance. I mixed up some juice and lubed and dried the patches going from 1:1 to 7:1 mix. This baby likes 3:1 pillow tick patches with a 530 ball...

    54 round ball twist

yea, found the rifle yesterday, just kinda fell in my lap and I couldn't pass it up. I appreciate all the info in this thread though, this old dog is always ready to learn new tricks. But now I need to be ready for when it arrives, need to make up some patch lube mix.

    54 round ball twist

I think that is what I am going to do but in a round about way. I came a cross a 1 year old Trade Rifle that has never been shot for a pretty good deal so I bought it. I am going to leave the 50 cal barrel alone for now. Thanks guys for all the advice!

    54 round ball twist

Gentlemen? thanks for all the great advice. I did have a lyman deerstalker a few years back that shot 2" groups off a bench at 100 yards with 90grs of 2f so I know a 1/48 twist can get er done. and having seen the liquification of a deers vitals that was subjected to a 530 ball from that rifle...

    54 round ball twist

guys, I am going to send Bobby Hoyt a 28" 50 cal hawken barrel and have him bore it out to 54. I figure anything a 50 can do a 54 can do better, not to mention a 50 ball is not legal for elk in my state. This will be a round ball gun only. My question is, what twist should I go with? I don't...

    ball patch thickness

A good place to start is .005 or .010 under the caliber size or land size for ball. Then .005 to .010 under the groove size. Take my 54 with a land size of .542 and a groove size of .558. If I use a 530 ball, thats .012 less than the land. The groove depth is .016 deeper than the land. So I need...

    round ball

Is .50 cal. roundball enough for a cow elk?

By the way, I'm not sure if this is allowed or not so please excuse me if it isn't, I mean no harm, but on this webpage http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=084174 if you scroll down you will see the vitals of an elk for shot placement. Everyone needs to know this...

Is .50 cal. roundball enough for a cow elk?

I've killed quite a few elk with both traditional bows and compounds. The longest shot being 52 yards with a compound. If you hit them right, broadside through the lungs, the arrows fly right threw, even out of a longbow moving at 180fps at 30 yards. When you open up an 1 1/8" hole in elk lungs...

    help sighting in my GPR

530 ball, .022 or .023 patch should work well. Or maybe the 535 ball with an .018 patch. 90grs of RS should be close too. Really tho, the best thing you could do is get Dutch's system http://www.blackpowderrifleaccuracy.com/ I shrank my groups down to 1 1/4" at 100 yards. All balls touching at...

I Need Advice On Elk Hunting With A Muzzle Loader

I have found over the years that during the day the elk are high. As evening comes they tend to feed down hill as they head for water. In the morning they will be fairly low and they will water and head up hill to bed somewhere. I have killed more elk over water than anything else and I rarely...

    Ethical Dilemma?

I typically hunt Utah and Nevada every year... alone. Both states have wanton waste of game laws so if you bone out an elk, which I do, you have to take all the meat out. I heard last year a guy forgot to get the tenderloins from an elk and was written a citation. Quite often it takes 3 to 4...
