Proper size ball for a .40 Cal Flintlock

The .390 would be the more common size down from the .395. I have a .40 with a Rayl barrel which uses a .400 ball and .018 pillow ticking patch.

Brass and Iron mounts on early guns

This was actually one of my considerations when I opted to have the barrel and furniture on my Early Virginia browned. My reasoning was a longhunter would prefer a browned barrel so sunlight would not reflect from his gun and give him away to any unfriendly Indians in the area. What do ya'll...

    Kentucky Rifles Comparison to Pedersoli

You are correct--the Pederoli is much different. I purchased my Pedersoli Kentucky new in 1991 as my first flintlock. I refer to it as a "generic" Kentucky--similar in alot of ways to Kentuckies, but enough differences to keep it from being really like a Kentucky. They do make excellent...

    English vs. Germanic Locks

What is the difference between the English and Germanic locks? My Early Virginia has a Chambers English lock, and it is round-faced; is that the major or only difference between the two? Another rifle I have has a small Siler--I guess that is a Germanic lock? And were the English locks used...

Brass and Iron mounts on early guns

Ok, if pre-revolutionary barrels were left in-the-white, with no browning, were they polished in any way? If not, it would seem as if a hunter with dirty hands covered with sweat and powder fouling would soon have rust spots covering wherever he touched unfinished iron.

Brass and Iron mounts on early guns

Fatdutchman hits on something when he says the modern desire for a totally brown gun. In my case, and I think in alot of others, it is belief in what was period correct, and not desire. Until this was posted, I was under the belief that brass-mounted rifles would fall into a later period. I...

    Type C & D French guns

Two quick questions along this line. Although C and D are modern disignations, are the dates TOTW gives for those "types" accurate regarding the decoration on those particular guns, i.e. would those guns have existed during those times wirh a correct lock? Caywood offers these models without a...

    Flint storage

I also bought three of those flints. I have mine in a riker case with a red velvet background and the printout which accompanied them hanging on my wall. To answer an earler question, they are black, although I have seen amber flints supposedly from the same wreck.

Brass and Iron mounts on early guns

Hi everyone, Not to beat a dead horse to death, but it has been stated that British laws would have made it dificult for colonists to have the iron available to make trim for their guns. If this were so, would it not have hindered gun production in the colonies even more, since the locks...

    Loads for 58 Cal Muskets

Hi everyone, What loads do y'all use in the .58 muskets for target work at 50 and 100 yards? Mine is an Aemi Sport Richmond, and I've experimented with 30 grs at 50 yards and 40 grs at 100, as well as trying 40 grs at 50 yards and 50 grs at 100. I use a 525 gr minie, usually lubed with Crisco...

    BP Granulation ?

Does anyone know what would the old powders of the 1700's be equivalent to in our modern granulation terms? I've seen sliced open original paper cartridges from the Civil War, and the powder appears to be closer to FFg.

    Flint storage

I have four flintlock rifles, each of which uses a different size flint, and each size is stored in a sealed container filled with water. I honestly believe it prevents the smaller flints from chipping prematurely, and helps them last longer. I first heard of it several years ago from an...

Military or Civilian for Hunting and Targets?

Thanks for the replies. When I said target work, what I meant, and failed to say, was for use in NMLRA-sanctioned smoothbore matches. It appears alot of consideration lies with weight of the gun. If that's the case, I guess lots of people may prefer the civilian type for competition as well?

Military or Civilian for Hunting and Targets?

Hi everyone, Two simple questions: which type of smoothbore is best for taget work and hunting, military (Bess, Charleville, etc.) or civilian (Tulle, Type C or D, trade gun) and why (weight, style of stock, caliber, etc.)? Thanks.

    Era of Tennessee rifle?

Would these be typical of the rifles carried by the Over Mountain Men who trekked to King's Mountain and defeated the Loyalists there? Sources I've read indicate these backwoodsmen from the Carolinas, Tennessee, and southwestern Virginia predominately carried rifles, not smoothbores, and I...

Brass and Iron mounts on early guns

We've talked about iron vs. brass mounts bring pc on F&I period firearms, but there is one more thing I would like to clarify. What about the "poor boys" without buttplates, nosecaps, or toeplates. Do these date from the pre-revolutionary period, and are they purely southern mountain rifles?

    2f or 3f in .54 Colerain?

Hello everyone, Just wanted opinions on what ya'll feel is best in a .54, FFg or FFFg. When I first started with muzzleloaders many years ago, I read the rule of thumb was FFFg up to .50, and FFg in .50 and above. Alot of the guys I shoot with use FFFg in larger calibers. What is your opinion...

Brass and Iron mounts on early guns

So, if some rifles of the F&I period were iron mounted, would any have possibly been browned? Or woukd the mounts and barrel have been left in the white?

    Loyalist Arms Doglock

Hello everyone, I'm contemplating acquiring a Loyalist Arms doglock, but before I do, can ya'll help me with the following questions: 1) The reason I'm considering this particular piece is because I understand it would have been available to a hunter on the South Carolina frontier mid 1750's to...

    Pedersoli Quality?

Ok, I'll share my experience with Pedersoli. I purchased my Kentucky rifle new from them in '91 or '92 for $250. It was my first flintlock after years of percussion shooting. I'll begin by saying I like the gun, and I've often heard Pedersoli has the reputation of being one of the best, if...
