Welcome aboard, Seargent Major! It's about time you made your way here. Now you need to work on gettin' my uncle in. I assume that you'll enlist in the Army of the East? There's some good info comes from this sight. Seems like a good bunch of folks. By the way, I'm going pig hunting in the...

    New Flinter Issues

A feller' sold me some of that polyester stuff at a rondy a few years back. It was camoflaged inside some of the good stuff in a roll. I didn't find out until I was home, but you know what, it shot pretty good.

I just joined the Crockett fraternaty.

Same here. I've had my Crockett for about two months, and it would take an army to get her away from me. She's a sweet shooter. I'm using 25 gr. of FFFg., with a .311 PRB, and she'll cut a nice hole at 30 yds.

What kind of rocks do you use in your flinters?

I've had good luck with local flint. I'm getting pretty good at recycling artifacts into rifle-flints. Plus, there is a guy at a flea market that I saw knapping arrowheads one day that will knap some blades out and all he wants in return is flint. There's a ton of it in the fields around the...

    New to BP world

Ahoy! I was AirWing aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, CVN 69, back in 1982. I reported to NAS Cecil Field with my duffle bag over my shoulder and a .50 cal. Hawken in hand. There was a Jarhead Gunney Sgt. that checked my rifle into the armory, and in a round about way he let it be known that...

    new kid in town

Welome to the fire, pilgrim. There's a lot of good advice coming from this forum. Don't be shy to ask about anything. :front:

    Howdy

You can pick up a lot of useful information here. I certainly have. Navy man, myself, but OOO-RAH, anyhow.

    .50 target loads

I tend to agree with most of the others about the one load. Knowing how your weapon performs at various ranges is, in my opinion, the most logical approach. My .50 has a GM 42" bbl. I'm partial to 70 gr. of Goex FFG with a .490 RB. That's my hunting load, shilouette load, and paper load. I...

Do any of you wear camo?

It depends on the legal requirements of the season and the weather. Here in lower TN the first couple of weeks of gun season can get downright warm, and squirrel season can get downright HOT!! I have worn my leggings, mocs, and drop sleeve shirt on several trips to the woods. When it is required...

    Man what a site!

Good to see another Tennessean aboard. I'm an Alabamian at heart, but we moved 2-1/2 miles across the TN line a few months ago. Anyway, we-uh awl suthunuhs at heart. I saw west TN on the post, I'm about 30 miles SW of Chatanooga. Get over this way, give a shout. You can learn alot from these...

    Era of Tennessee rifle?

I recently talked with a gentleman who has published a series of books called "Notes on Southern Longrifles" that shows several of these fine, old weapons. His name is Jerry Noble. He contends that there is a long-standing debate over the manufacture of rifles in Tennessee before 1800. IMHO, it...

    newbie

Coonhound Man, welcome to camp. Say your folks were in the Carolinas in the late 1700's? My folks came into Tennessee (Blount Co.) about 1784 from York Co., PA. I have been fortunate to find enough information about my people that I have tracked down two signed rifles made by my fifth-great...

    very green

Glad you came aboard, but heed my warning....Run, young man, run. Flee from this nasty habit. Blackpowder is more addictive to some of us than the most evil of narcotics. First, you'll buy a factory weapon. Then you'll start wanting to build a kit. Then you'll start thinking about buying...

    Spring Turkey

Good bird. Nice looking weapon, as well.

    trouble shooting

Well Swank, there's a lot of iron in the responses that you've gotten. Most of it sounded like good advice. I would recommend that if you're not schooled in the art, leave the frizzen hardening to someone that is (take my word on this one). On many a hot July and August day spent on the range I...

    Best Gauge for Turkey

Quite simple. More shot usually means a quicker demise for the critter. Ever had to chase a gobbler down? With only one shot you need to make it count.

How many of you do this?

Well, Noah, if you're a girlie-hunter, I reckon' that I am, too. I thank my Maker after every harvest (and I often read the New Testament in the tree-stand) because that's the way that I was raised. I'm 6'4", 315 lbs., I'm a bearded, pot-bellied biker, a hunter, and most importantly, a...

    Best Gauge for Turkey

IMHO, the more shot you put in motion, the better off you are. I presently shoot a 12 ga., but I'm considering building a 10 ga.

    Home made flinter

Like I said, she was a full choke to start out. Didn't shoot a pattern worth a flip. Uncle Joe took a cylinder hone, the kind with 3 stones, some cutting fluid, and an electric drill. First, he ran the hone back-and-forth in the muzzle until he thought that it was close to a Modified choke...

    Home made flinter

I'll have to get my niece to take a few photos, but I'm warning you fellers', Brown Betty is like a lot of the women at a biker rally...They look good from fer' off, but when you get close up, @#$%&%!!! As far as the card specifics, I use the same type card throughout the load. Easier to keep...
