    Recommendations for first flinter

Hey guys- As usual, thanks for all the great advice. I've already given up Casinos and movies, beer and gas for the truck are non-negotiable. :winking: Thanks for the hint at the PA Pellet, I didn't even know it existed. I went to the Traditions site and looked it over. It doesn't look like a...

    Recommendations for first flinter

I imagine this is a pretty common question, but I couldn't find it in the last few pages of posts on this board- I've got 5 percussion guns now, I love BP, and am thinking of getting a flinter. Any recommendations for a starter flintlock? I mean, something reliable and fun, not too expensive...

    CW-era Military Repro Recommendations

Man, I love this board!. All great advice guys, I really appreciate it, esp. the heads up about the Nationals in Winchester. That's just an hour or so away, so you can bet I'll be there. The rec. re. drop/fit are particularly important to, as I'm 6'5", and I find it makes a difference in all...

    CW-era Military Repro Recommendations

I've been shooting Hawken-style percussion sidelocks, but I've become interested in getting a reproduction of a CW-era military weapon, and would welcome any opinions. I don't plan on doing any reenacting, but I would like for the gun to meet basic standards of historical accuracy. Even more...

Old T/C Renegade Tang Screw Question

    Excellent, Thanks Roundball!

Old T/C Renegade Tang Screw Question

I recently bought an old T/C Renegade stock and lockn no barrel. When I stripped off the hardware to refinish it, I noticed the breech lug tang screws were just 1.25" wood screws, unlike my other guns (including an identical Renegade) where at least one screw goes all the way through the stock...

    Musket Caps Vs. #11 Caps

Landngroove, thanks for chiming in. I should have PM'd you since I was quoting you in the subject. I apologize. And thanks for the tip as well.

    New Rifle

Ironman- I may have you beat, though your rifle is new. I bought a T/C Renegade stock on eBay (and dropped a new barrel into it. Paid a bit too much overall, not the point). Went to a local gunshop to get some .54 roundballs and some advice, and the owner pulled out a barely used .50 Renegade...

    Musket Caps Vs. #11 Caps

Thanks for the info everyone. I hope my problems aren't cleaning related, it seems I spend enough time on that as it is. I've been dying to buy some real BP, but I haven't found a local shop that sells it. I'm hoping to pick up some at the NMLRA Sring Shoot in June. Maybe I'll try converting...

    Musket Caps Vs. #11 Caps

On another topic, a shooter with cap problems was advised to try swapping out his #11 nipple for a musket cap nipple. ---From Landandgroove----- T/C makes a replacement musketcap nipple for its percussion muzzleloaders. I have replaced the standard #11 nipple with this on several of my T/C...

    New .54/Green Mountain Questions

Interesting feedback on the ramrods. Its amazing how such a simple bit of equipment can have such an impact on a day of shooting. After my last post, I decided that the ramrod extending past the barrel really did kind of bother me. Track of the Wolf seems to have a good replacement. Since I...

    New .54/Green Mountain Questions

Thanks for the load info. Actually, the ramrod doesn't really bother me that much, I just wasn't sure if it was a good idea to have it hanging out there.

    New .54/Green Mountain Questions

I started out with a .50 CVA Hawken, which I still like (fit and finish notwithstanding), but felt the need to expand. I wanted something different, maybe a little flexible. So, I bought an older T/C Renegade stock (1" channel) with all the hardware on eBay, and a spankin' new Green Mountain .54...

    An ethics/legal/neighbor question

Gotta tell you guys, I'm finding this board invaluable. Actually, the members of the "Home Owners Association" get together twice a year to drink beer, eat barbecue, and talk about the plowing and maintenance on our common gravel road. According to the HOA agreement when the land was...

    An ethics/legal/neighbor question

OK, long story short - I like guns, esp my CVA .50 Hawken and .54 T/C Renegade. Never been deer hunting, but seriously considering it. Just bought 13 acres in WV with regular deer crossings. Problem - 13 acres doesn't exactly spread to the horizon. If I shot a deer and it ran more than a...

    Conicals in a Hawken-style rifle

Hey, that's exactly what I'm getting ready to do. I just picked up a Renegade stock/lock in eBay, and intend to add a .54 GMB. I was even going to post this same question re. twist. Small world. Deadeye, how did you like that rifle?

How many of you do this?

Once again you all have come up with some pretty helpful advice. I'm afraid my offhand comment took this thread off-topic, but what I think this proves is that I ought to persuade one of my neighbors to come along. I think a bourbon-bribe will work pretty well. Thanks again.

How many of you do this?

Thanks for all the advice guys. I really wish rabid antihunting people could read a thread like this sometime, it might surprise them to learn that hunters are far more thoughtful than they might think, and that there's a lot more to hunting than just blasting away. Chuck, my cabin is slowly...

How many of you do this?

First, I'd like thank eveyone for their posts. This addresses something I've been thinking about a lot for the last couple of years. I grew up in the suburbs, and my Dad died when I was 2. Still, I spent many afternoons for years chasing squirrels with an old Bear target bow. The squirrels were...

What do you keep in your patchbox?

Actually, I think I just found a use. After cleanup, I put the nipple and screw for the drum cleaning hole into the patchbox before putting the rifle away, figuring it might help avoid condensation. Does this make sense?
