    Caliber for Squirrel Hunting

May seems a strange time to start a squirrel season unless your state likes to orphan baby squirrels. That's not your fault. Cheaper than getting a whole new rifle would be to get a drop in .32 barrel for your T/C Hawken the next time some extra cash blows your way.

One for the cannon disasters page

Since I can't say anything about these towns people without resorting to fowl languge I will calm myself and only say this. Why did they bother to x-ray the cannon if they weren't going to do anything about the findings?

    6 Bore On Gunbroker

I disagree with Mike Brooks on this one. I would give $35 for it, but $1,500 ouch.

    Ball Bearings???

I would stay away from steel for all the reasons already mentioned. I like it for shot because you get more pellets for the same weight compared to lead, but that wouldn’t make a difference with a single round ball.

    Unbelievable Fowler & Pistol

They are truly amazing  , but IMHO I must say they are a little too much for me. I would be proud to have any of those elements on one of my guns, but not all on one. Perhaps I was just not raised with too many jewels around.

Is it me or is this thing a reproduction?

    NEED C&B DANGEROUS GAME BACKUP!

I believe bayonets were first invented for wild boar hunters to defend themselves from their prey. I think the best back up though would be another barrel, (side by side or swivel) I would rather have a .58 or .72 cal bullet coming from a rifle barrel than try to unholster some giant bolder of...

    head shot

I hate to admit that I did this, but maybe someone can learn from my stupidity. I was 14 and shot at running buck with a 20 gauge shotgun, smoothbore bead sight. Slug hit the deer in the back of the head and exited the eye. The deer cart wheeled and crashed, then it started to get up, I shot...

    BBs for general purpose load?

I have used no 2 steel with more success than #8 lead (centerfire shotgun) on pesky house sparrows and starlings. The larger projectiles bring them down no matter where they are hit. Also I've go squirrel hunting after duck hunting to unload the 10 gauge BP and BB's are easy to pick out of the...

    leaving m/l loaded

I always fire at the end of the day, I get to plink and I get see the fireball come out of the barrel at dusk. Plus I get to practice cleaning a muzzleloader and what could be more fun. :rotf:

    Smoked Sqirrels

After my usually unsuccessful duck hunts I head into the woods to unload, nothing smokes squirrel like a 10 gauge. Trouble is waiting for the smoke to clear and see where they fall. Yes they are still edible, I aim about a 18 inches in front of their noses

Hunting load for a 1853 Enfield

Since I have been thinking about this lately I took a close look at my rear sight, and it is not sitting as low as it should. It sits about where the 200 yard elevation even though it is set at 100. I loosened the screw that holds the spring down on sight and that lowered the sight to where it...

Where to cut wood from a log for blanks

This is a pretty small piece of cherry, about 6 inches wide (should have put something fro refrence in the photo) that I am only going to get some knife blanks out of. Some worms and or carpenter ants got too much of it. I asked my dad to get me some twigs from the black cherry for flavoring...

Where to cut wood from a log for blanks

I am getting some practice with my woodworking skills before I move on to building a gun. I am wondering where the best blanks can be cut from on a tree, not the species, I will use black walnut and black cherry. I am planning on using some of my own wood (in log form now) to practice on for...

What will you be hunting with this year

I’ll be using my .58 1853 Enfield on deer once I get it shooting straight. Then I’ll be gunning for ducks, squirrels, and basically anything legal and edible that crosses my path with my Cabela’s/Pedersoli double 10 ga. with 110 gr. and as many #2’s she’ll hold for ducks and geese anyway.

Hunting load for a 1853 Enfield

I am guessing that I do have an oversize bore. The quality of few of the parts of the rifle are not what I expect for what the rifle cost, but there is an awful lot of steel and walnut in one of these. I wouldn’t doubt that tolerances for the bore were not very fine. I will give these ideas a...

Hunting load for a 1853 Enfield

I have tried using 60-100 gr. of 2f. The mines are made of soft lead, they came in a pile in a box and some of the skirts were dented. There was also air pockets in the hollow were expansion is supposed to take place. My dad gave me a box of saboted bullets, but that is not what I want to...

Hunting load for a 1853 Enfield

I need help trying to get some accuracy out of my reproduction 1853 3 band Enfield. I’m hoping to be able to shoot deer out to a maximum 100 yards, likely 50-75 yards. I have tried .575 minnes from Dixie, but the quality was poor, and I might have put too much powder behind them because they...
