    Cap Jamming

Look up duelist1954 on this forum. He does instructional videos on these firearms. In fact he just posted one addressing your issues today. You'll find it in Gunbuilder's section of the forum.

Looking for a period correct smoothbore - help!

don't quote me on this, but a few years ago at Colonial Williamsburg Gunshop, I heard the gunsmith say there were 70 man hours of work in each rifle. Correct me if I'm wrong. I doubt they were working on one gun at a time. they also said guns were built on order. guns usually weren't built on...

    poor boy /barn gun lock???

if 'barn gun' is not historically accurate, where does the term 'shimmel' fit in? I see them used interchangeably.

    politeness

I for one could not agree with you more. There tends to be a little too much bashing going on here at times. And it takes away from the feeling of community I come here for. We're supposed to be adults, not snobby grade schoolers. I'm glad someone was mature enough to bring this up.

    rifles and fowlers

so I take it, the only real difference is the shape of the butt? A fowler's butt is quicker to shoulder, while a rifle butt is steadier for actual aiming due to it's more concave shape? Aside from barrel weight and rear sights of course.

    rifles and fowlers

I'm aware of those components. but I've heard that a smoothbore with rifle architecture is not good for upland game, fowling in the purer sense of the word. is it the drop of the comb, lop, shape of the wrist?

    rifles and fowlers

This may seem like a dumb question but what exactly is the difference in stock shape between rifles and fowlers? to my untrained eyes they don't seem that much different. What am I missing?

Southern Mtn build, in the white.

Out of curiosity Paul, older guns tended to have shorter lop's. Would this be to move the COG back to help balance those long barrels? Moving the weight of the lock, trigger guard and some of the barrel back an inch or two. Just wondering.

    Williamsburg gun shop closed?

That would be a real tragedy as those were some of the nicest gents I've ever met. I was there a few months back and they were very polite as well as knowledgeable. They answered all my questions(and there were plenty)in pleasant form. It would be a shame to lose them. Billy

    Reaming a brass barrel?

Try toad hall http://www.iowatelecom.net/~toadhall/index.htm They explain the process, you just have to build a reamer to suit you.

Is it the light or is the rib made of wood? Maybe brass?

    Cast Iron barrel

If it's a gun barrel I doubt it's cast iron. Cast iron does not lend itself to gun barrels. It can't be forged like wrought or mild steel. If you want to try it proof it first. IMHO, if it's old it's probably wrought iron. Billy

    Making oilcloth

I'm of the opinion that if you oil it first, it won't soak up the pigment. If it repels water it probably repels everything else. Just my humble opinion. Billy

    flatting horn scales

You may want to take a smooth plane and clamp it upside down in a vice. Be very careful or better yet use some sort of push stick. Plane irons can take off skin too. Billy
