    New member from Texas

Welcome Judge. I'm a bit west of you in Aledo (Parker Co.). I think you will find this forum informative and interesting. There are a lot of very knowledgeable experts here not only with regard to BP shooting but history as well.

    Picked up a new book

I would also recommend From the Arquebus to the Breechloader.

    Best movie fight sceen

Those are all good! I would add the fight in the BBQ/soda shop in the movie "Second Hand Lions". Notice how many of these scenes include Robert Duvall:)

    How to stop ricochets?

At our range (Parker County, TX), the biggest problem we have is people shootin such that their rounds impact the flat hardpan well in front of the berm. Sometimes ricochets clear the rear or side berms. I've noticed this is primarily a problem with FMJ bullets. I suspect lead balls wouldn't...

    Stephen E Ambrose

Undaunted Courage is a very good book (as are most of his others). I believe he was accused of plagarism in his last book about the air war in Europe. It is my understanding that his son wrote sections of this book and the story as to who did the plagarizing is muddied somewhat. Ambrose passed...

    Sons of Texas trilogy...

Elmer Kelton is probably my favorite western writer. The Son's of Texas trilogy books are very good. If you've not read any of his other books -- here are some of my other favorites of his: The Time it Never Rained (Ranching in the 1950s) The Wolf and the Buffalo (Comanche Indian wars) The Man...

"Lock and Load" on History Channel

Of course, you never know -- the moderator (Gunny in this case) may not have made the mistakes so much as the show's editor. I wonder how much Gunny has a say in the final editted product.

"Lock and Load" on History Channel

I saw the show too and it really bugged me that the animation of the Krag continually showed the loading gate standing open during the sequence. Also, they showed what looked like .30-06 cartridges in the Krag, but I guess I'm being too picky. Call me biased. It would have been nice if...

    What is this? Any Idea???

    What is this? Any Idea???

Assuming it had lain in the desert for many, many years, it may well have washed from its original drop point. The other parts could be scattered far and wide if that's the case. "The Commanche's got my horse with an arrow in the withers and another in the neck. With a tear in my eye, I had to...

    Round Ball Question

Never-never-never use lead reclaimed from a car battery for bullet material. The chemicals in car batteries are retained on the lead and when you smelt the lead, very toxic fumes will be emitted. Only use wheel weights or pure lead purchased from a supplier. Smelting lead from a car battery is...

Davy -- where were you visiting when you got to see all that neat stuff?

    Casting safety question

I second the comments regarding casting temp -- only go as hot as you need. Lead won't gassify until it reaches something around 1000F. Nevertheless, I always use a well ventilated area. Be sure and keep ALL liquids away from your work area and wash your hands with dishwasher liquid like...

    Book - Killer Angels?

Killer Angels is one of my all-time favorite books. I've since become hooked on Michael Shaara's son Jeff's writings. IMO - two of Jeff's best books are Gone for Soldiers (about the Mexican American War) and To the Last Man (WW1). The Last Full Measure is also excellent. I highly recommend all...

    Muzzle energy vs. momentum

LOL! Well said. I've often had the same feelings. I never bother reading the this caliber versus that threads on other boards anymore. Its like a popularity contest. Just get one of each

    Muzzle energy vs. momentum

After reading through the various posts, these are all good comments. Back to the original question -- bullet penetration trends very well with momentum. It does not trend well with muzzle energy. A great deal of muzzle energy can be obtained with a very small projectile and a lot of velocity --...

Which brand of round ball mold?

I use Lee moulds almost exclusively (except for one custom CBE mould) and have have good luck with them. They are good moulds for the price. Just follow the instructions that come with the mould (to the letter) and you will have no problems.

SO ? What is your personal AREA, ort AREAS or Interest

I am an aerospace engineer and I love history. I guess my engineering and history "likes" leads to an enjoyment of the history of technology. I enjoy collecting, studying and shooting older rifles. I also enjoy handloading and bullet casting. My initial interest in muzzle loading simply came...

    RANGE REPORT: .50cal rubber balls

Pouring any sort of molten metal into a hollow rubber ball would well... melt the ball I suppose. I was sort of pondering if you could use molten zinc (since zinc WW are all the rage now).

    RANGE REPORT: .50cal rubber balls

Now we just need to figure out a way to hollow them out somewhat and fill them with a dense metal in order to make them heavier. Of course, that would drive the cost up...
