    Brain tanning

Micanopy, that is the most realistic set of braintanning instructions that I have ever read. :rotf: I prefer two bottles of likker for the stretching and softening stage.

Can't see front sight in low light

My flintlock has a thin silver front blade, and I can't hardly see it under most conditions. I lay the white-out or white paint to it, fixes it right up.

    CVA Hawken on the range

That's some good shooting. I have a CVA St. Louis Hawken that shoots a lot better than I do.

    Fiber wad question

I'd be cutting a chunk of my shirt off really quick. :)

    Double Trigger questions

Don't know why anyone would want to switch it for a single-the set trigger gives you a lot more accuracy IMO. And I don't understand the hunting/target analogy-hunting is when I really want to use that hair trigger. It doesn't matter much to me if I hit a paper bullseye, but it matters very much...

    St Louis Hawken Barrel

Leadpot, my St. Louis Hawken shoots really good with 350 grain maxi-hunters in front of 90 grains of powder. Killed lots of deer with that load.

    Got the CVA .58 today

Those are good rifles, I have an old .54 big bore Mountain Rifle in flint that's a good shooting gun. Birddog, the "aluminum pot metal" nose cap is pewter. Most of the mounting is German silver.

    neck shots ???

Go for the lungs. I've shot several deer in the neck over the years, both intentionally and unintentionally. I don't like the shot. Usually puts 'em down, but you usually have to finish 'em off.

Ever use TC Maxi Ball or other??

90 grains FFg works well with the maxis in my .50

Ever use TC Maxi Ball or other??

I have a .50 CVA St. Louis Hawken with 1/48" twist that likes T/C 350 grain maxi-hunters. I've killed probably 20-25 deer with this combo, I've found the maxi-hunters to be really devastating on deer. I've only had to blood trail about a quarter of the ones I've shot with maxis, and there is...

    T/C hawken pics

Looks good, Tim! I knew you made some nice bows, didn't know you were a BP burner, too.

    Need help purchasing first Flintlock

:surrender: I wasn't trying to come across as argumentative, I'm just saying that some of the CVA's were decent, reliable guns. Some of them were junk, too-and in all fairness, I bought a cheap CVA mountain stalker many years ago that was junk. It was the cheapest thing they made and it showed...

    Need help purchasing first Flintlock

One of these days, I'll have a good non-production flintlock, but everybody has to start somewhere. It just bothers me when someone makes snobby generaliztions like "all CVA guns are worthless junk," simply because they're not custom made or American. And a lot of people who say that don't own...

    Need help purchasing first Flintlock

I have an old CVA Mountain Rifle flinter that seems to work pretty good to me. All of us aren't rich enough to afford those 5,000 dollar custom guns, so we shoot those worthless rifles that all the fine people snurl their noses up at and won't speak to you any more after they see you touch one...

    leaving powder in

Sure. Do you think the old-timers unloaded every day? As long as your powder stays dry, you can leave it loaded for months and it'll go bang just like it did the day you loaded it.(From the previous post about the rusted balls, I wouldn't try it with a spit-lubed patch, though. :shocked2:)...

    bullet lube?

I forget sometimes that TC makes both, also. I have heard bad things myself about the maxi-ball, but the maxi-hunter seems to be well-liked by everyone who hunts with it. Not many moose here in NC, so I don't know anything about shooting those. I prefer roundballs myself, too, and that's...

    maxihunter expansion?

"Shoot what's accurate and what you can tolerate." 'Zactly. That's why I started shooting maxis in my Hawken was because it had that 1 in 48" twist and they were a lot more accurate than roundballs out of that gun. The smackdown they put on a deer is just a bonus. They do put a lot of kick on...

    bullet lube?

Dan Phariss said: "The problem exhibited by the TC Maxi is very poor performance on game due to lack of expansion and failure to stay on track after striking game with the 48" twist." ?????????????????????????- Not trying to argue, but that's definitely news to me, I've shot probably 25 deer...

    maxihunter expansion?

Me and a friend killed 4 deer last week with T/C 350 grain maxi-hunters, one buck I shot dropped dead literally in its tracks, as did one of his, the other two were couple-of-jumps-and-fall-over. One of the deer he shot was quartering, and we recovered the bullet. Talk about expansion, it was...
