    .58 Carbine 3F Recommendations

Made it back to the range today, pulled the nipple and trickled some powder in and put it back together, pulled the trigger, and a big bang, there was powder under that ball after all. Put several more balls through it and seems to be fine. Thanks for all the advice from everyone, find the...

    Ball Pulling

I'll give it a try in the morning. I cleaned the gun very well before taking it to the range so I was surprised at the misfire so early in the session, I was running a patch between shots also, but was having a conversation with a friend while loading it. I don't multitask all that well anymore...

    Ball Pulling

Not completely sure about the powder. I know its pretty common to forget it.

    Ball Pulling

Finally got my .54 renegade to the range this afternoon, got three shoots out of it and then got a load that wouldn't fire. Tried several caps, removed nipple, not plugged up, was using 60g of triple 7 and prb. Next step I would guess is to get the charge out so I can get the channel opened up...

    Two Questions

I think they used cornmeal for corn bread, common sense, corn = food, not, corn = fuel. Hey....I got a smart idea.....lets convert our food supply into fuel for our vehicles.....and burn it. Wouldn't make very good indians.

    Gain Twist

Dixie sells that model and lists it as Progressive, 1:30 twist, .008 deep, 5 lands and 5 grooves. I wonder if you could see anything like reduced rifling depth by looking down the bore?

New to Me Pietta 1858 Remington

I bought one a month or so ago, really enjoy shooting it, I use Hornady .454 balls, over 23 grains of Triple 7, measured by volume, and home made wads of felt with cci # 10 caps. Just remember you have to clean it after you shoot it. I use water. Works great. Spend some time reading up on black...

    Gain Twist

Was thinking about why they went with that, a ball has a very minimal bearing surface in contact with the rifling compared to a bullet, and may have had a tendency to strip as it entered the rifling. No patch could be used with the cylinder gap. Must have been tricky to come up with a machine to...

    Gain Twist

I read that somewhere and glad someone could verify that. Didn't realize Colt used it too. I read S&W used it in the newer 460 revolvers. May have to get one of those Pietta shooters models someday. Seems pretty high tech for the time period. Thanks.

    Gain Twist

Did the original '58 Remingtons have gain twist rifling?

    Thompson Renegade

Bought it. Just finished cleaning it up. Just light rust in the barrel, could feel no bulges in the barrel either. Happy camper. Looking forward to getting it to the range.

    Thompson Renegade

Went by the gun shop this morning and checked out the renegade, checked it over as good as I could in the store, .54 caliber, percussion, double triggers. Checked the bore and found some rust, asked the gunsmith what he thought, said he had seen many with a lot more rust, thought a good cleaning...

    Thompson Renegade

Thanks for the in depth check list. I'll check it out, lock, stock and barrel.

    Thompson Renegade

Kinda what I was thinking, not a bad looking gun for that price, I'll stop by in the morning and give it a better look. Saw it there not knowing very much about them and thought I'd ask someone more knowledgeable. Would be my first B.P. rifle, looks like fun. Be like a kid again with my first .22.

    Thompson Renegade

New to this black powder stuff. Local shop has a Renegade for sale for $150. Just wanted to see what your opinions were of them, probably bottom of the line model, worth buying? How do you check a barrel on a muzzle loader since one end is plugged? Thanks.

    New '58 Remington

Thanks for all the replies. I ordered some wads from TOTW, going to give them a try. I've got a big piece of felt leftover from another project and some leather punches, I might try to cut a few out of that if i can find the right size punch. Seems like purpose-built punches are a bit expensive...

    New '58 Remington

Just picked up a stainless '58 Remington revolver from Cabelas, was wondering how much difference accuracy wise do wads make? Tried it without wads. Are wads pretty much mandatory for reasonable accuracy, if so what seems to work best in these types of guns? I'm new to black powder but have been...
