Lead ball alternative: .43cal solid hard rubber balls

Thats funny. For survival, I would have sorted out the largest rounded pebbles that would fit in the barrel, and put a thick wad of crushed green leaves beneath it. I might have even put in 2 or 3 pebbles, and thin wad of crushed green leaves on top to hold them in.

    Sources to buy lead?

I've heard dryer lint doesn't cast very well. I mean.. I've made analogies too, but that one was just silly.

    Lead

The romans had lead rotting thier brains, but most of it wasn't from the plumbing, some of it was from thier wine directly because of lead stoppers, but most of it was from "sappa" which was fruit juice concentrated by boiling it in lead vessels. They loved sappa and used it to sweeten and...

    Sources to buy lead?

Right now, at least with 54 caliber 100 bullets the high priced premade roundballs are $12 per hundred. That comes out around $3.60 a lb. So if you find 54 caliber roundballs on sale it's a better price than buying the metal, and even if you don't it's a small difference for the trouble of...

    First Muzzleloader

Thanks folks! I plan on working my way up to a hunting load and shoot that all the time so I have a defined trajectory no matter what I'm doing. I'll be making my own black powder so the cost or availability of powder really isn't a issue.

    I got hosed

Ebay ?soft? lead is selling around $1+ per pound in 50 lb quantities. (the most you can fit in a $10 flat rate package)

    First Muzzleloader

I took my used T/C Hawking out to the range for the first time today. I only loaded it up with 60 grains 3Fg, and the roar was surprising! Thank god for the two triggers, it was much easier making suspending expectation for the boom! I'm looking forward to trying the max 100 grains 3Fg! It was...

How old can BP be and be safe?

A little bit of rust won't hurt it, if anything a small amount would improve it's performance since iron oxide is a catalyst for most pyrotechnic applications.(but probably only if it was incorporated inside the powder)

    Ignition temps of Subs?

Ulrich Bretschner's web site, the MSDS's for 777 and Pyrodex, and general experience with fireworks compositions. Ulrich Bretscher's Black Powder Page Note: You can pretty much ignore the graphite listed in the msds's, it's just a light surface coat to help the powder flow better and look...

    Is this safe?

If what you're shooting is light like a tennis ball, and there is a loose fit with no wad, then this is more of a fireworks mortar instead of a artillery mortar. ^ note proviso's on weight and loose fit above ^ The 300 grain charge = 19.44 grams If you're lifting a tennis ball then you have...

    Scope mount removal.

Well, I didn't get a chance to read the previous 2 replies, and I was afraid of overheating the barrel and loosing the temper. I did follow up with my original plan and it worked. I used a rotozip to cut off the top of the scope mounts, then deepen the screw slots. This gave me enough that I...

    Load quantity help with Pioneer..

American Pioneer is another sulferless powder BP replacement like 777. I can't find a MSDS to find the ingredients, but it's supposed to be stronger than BP and much easier to clean than 777, so it probably uses a different fuel than charcoal, maybe sugar, lactose, or ascorbic acid as well as...

    Scope mount removal.

I bought a used T/C Hawkin from a pawn shop. It has a scope mounted, but I didn't think that was a issue, that should be simple to fix. I have no idea what they guy used to cement the screws into the barrel, but they've been extremely stubborn. Well, after using penetrating oil with...

    Ignition temps of Subs?

Black powder lowest temp: ~ 300 C, or 576 F (varies slightly based on formula differences) The interesting thing is that the subs are so high sulfurless bp is in the same range. Sulfurless BP: ~400C, or 755 F. (sulfur is in bp mainly to lower the ignition temperature) I might just make up a...

    GPR flinter kit?

Mine just arrived in the mail. I'll give the best answers based on my limited knowledge of guns. How well do the parts fit: Looks OK except for the butt plate, it came pre-attached, but the suckers misaligned so it's short wood on one corner. It looks like I should be able to take it off, fill...

    OIL and FOULING

Castor oil is a very interesting oil. It's very slippery. It's very resistant to bursting into flame because it's stressed process is to chain into more complex molecules instead of breaking down to simpler more flamible molecules. Good part, it's perfect for a wad mix because it boosts the...

    Another TC Hawken

Well the "good shape" was relative. There's a bullet loaded, and the cheap scope on it has the screws stuck. I just ordered a CO2 system to get the bullet out (I had planned on getting one eventually anyway). Whats the best way to get the screws loose, penitrating oil?
