    Do you prefer percussion?

My most prized possesion is my handmade flintlock. It is the most fun gun I have. I think percussion guns are easier to clean, and in inclement weather, more reliable.

    Sights vs. Eyesight

Try shooting without the glasses. I can't read a sigm very well without them, but I have found that I shoot much better without them on.

    Stock Carving Machine

Hi, Does anyone know what kind of machines carve gun stocks for mass production. I've always wondered how they do that.

    Frankenrifle. Shorty Hog gun.

Kinda reminds me of an A-10 Warthog. Not much in the looks department but tough as nails and has one hellofa bite.

    1858 2 Band Enfield

The one I am looking at is a Euroarms.

    1858 2 Band Enfield

Thats a good idea. What size caps do they use, #11? It would probably be a good idea to order an extra nipple or two when I order the bullet molds. Thanks.

    1858 2 Band Enfield

Thanks for the scoop Zonie. I was afraid you were going to say that about the sights though. I REALLY hate it when you can't calibrate the sights. I guess its an OCD thing.

    1858 2 Band Enfield

I am thinking about an 1858 Enfield for my next acquisition. How easy is it to get the barrel out for cleaning? Also, it doesn't look like you can adjust either the front or rear sights for windage. How does one correct any sight inaccuracies from the factory?

    First Muzzleloader

Effective recoil = mass X velocity / time. Black powder burns much slower than smokeless and the time required to accelerate the ball to velocity is about three times more than smokeless. Hench the long barrels on a longrifle. This results in a shove as opposed to a slam. So effective recoil...

First Muzzleloader - any advice? T/C Hawken

In my T/C Hawken I get the best results with 60-70 grains of 777 FFF with a .49 ball and a .015 patch. 777 burns a lot cleaner than anything else I've tried. It gives good consistant results. Its also expensive.

    Looking for a percussion rifle

I have a T/C Hawken. I love that gun. I have had only one issue with it. The 2 screws inside the lock plate loosen after several shots. Two drops of lock tight fixed it. Its a GREAT entry level gun. The rear sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation. The Barrel is 28.5" and is...

What is the definative book on early American flintlock design history?

    Hammer does not strike cap

I have had the same thing happen. A lock washer won't fit on the screws and Lock Tight is heresy. What's a guy to do?

    FF -VS- FFF Burn Rates

I found some interesting discussion below on barrel lengths and their relationship to % of powder burned during a discharge. Interesting reading. Is there a difference between FF and FFF in burn rates? Does FF require a longer barrel because it burns a little slower? Thanks

    TC cleaning rods

My T/C Hawken ramrod is 28.5". I think the Renegade is also 28.5". There are 32" inch versions out there as well. Get a dowel rod from a hardware or arts and crafts store and stick it down the barrel and mark it so you can measure it. Track of the Wolf, The Possibles Shop, and others sell...

    USS CONSTELATION (1854)

A couple of weeks ago I got back from Baltimore, having spent a few weeks at Johns Hopkins. While there I visited the USS Constelation (2nd 1854). I was real lucky to have visited when the Marine Detachment reenactors "had the duty". It was the most fun I've had in an afternoon in quite some...

    Cast Balls

I went to the NMLRA shoot at Friendship and picked up some cast .54 balls Saturday. They they have protrusions from the casting sprue and are not round. Does this not affect the accuracy of the ball? Is there an easy way to trim/file them off? What did they do before swaged balls? Thanks

    Slings on Flintlocks

When did rifle slings begin to make their appearance on American made rifles? I was looking at the Pedersoli Yaeger which comes in both flintlock and precussion. Both are set up for slings. When did slings become a hit? Would the flintlock version be historically correct with hardware for a...

    Stuck Ramrod

Guys, Thanks for the input. Right after I posted the question, I had to drop what I was doing and run out to the Baltimore area for a couple of weeks. The gun is in Ohio and I can't apply any of your suggestions. To answer some of the posts, it is a hand built rifle, builder unknown...
