Making first horn, Dyeing question among others.

These are great things to know and try. I am looking forward to the dying process when I get the supplies. Flint Hunter, I carved the plug with a dremmel. I pressed the end of the horn into some Styrofoam then cut out the impression. then I used that to draw the line on a piece of Juniper limb...

    Waxed knapsacks

In order to keep the leather soft you need to mix beeswax with something like lanolin. Otherwise it soaks into the leather and hen gets stiff. Eric Methven who is on this forum may be able to speak to this. He taught me how to make a leather canteen using beeswax. I use beeswax on vegetable...

First build, Lyman Great Plains Rifle build along.

Aeronca just introduced me to a website of Jerry Huddleston who happens to live about 22 miles from me. Talk about making my riffle look insignificant! Wow is all I can say. His site says he has been making guns and engraving/ carving them for 50 years. I am awed,(and humbled)! Kirby.

First build, Lyman Great Plains Rifle build along.

Ok, I completed the browning and scrubbed each piece with water mixed with baking soda using an old toothbrush. Not having a torch to heat the parts like the instructions directed I set them on the top of my wood stove and cranked it up. They got plenty hot. I then oiled the parts with motor...

First build, Lyman Great Plains Rifle build along.

Thanks, Cody I think that was it. Fortunately I used steel wool on the barrel and it evened out. I wraped it up last night with most of the parts but the bottom plate that meets up with the butt plate just peeled all the browning off when I carded it last time. I tried again last night and it...

Karwelis, What finish did you put on the barrel and furniture on that rifle in the picture? I am a little guy, short reach. I don't know if I will add weight to the sock or not, yet. I will shoot it a bit first. I can always drill and add weight later. Kirby

Mykeal, Yes it is LMF I ordered. I guess I was making the metal part of this project harder than it had to be. I intend to go over all the metal parts again with 230 grit while I am waiting for the solution to get here. Thanks to the wonderful information on this sight, such as your comments...
