    First Build Finished!

Well....let's say 98% finished  I still have a few nick-nacks to attend to, but she'll hunt! Everyone...I am pleased to present my .36 cal squirrel rifle. It started out as a TOW Classic Golden Age kit, but I used a blank instead of a pre-carved stock. The gun is not a...

The rifle with the meteor sights

Drool drool..... Hi Dave, as a neophyte builder who just finished his first carvings on a gun stock, I'm looking at your carvings with a critical eye, and I have to ask...how'd you do that? My carvings, at least me, look rather crude, and yours look like they were carved by a CNC machine...

Hi Fred, This gun just a mix of different pictures of guns, and my imagination. The next one I make will be a copy of an original. Thanks!

Howdy fellers, I took a mental health day off of work Friday and got to play in the garage. After draw filing the barrel and polishing the lock, I started the browning process using Homer Dangler browning solution. Here are the before pics: After about 4 treatments. I doused the parts...

    Prep for browning

Howdy fellers, I'm polishing my lock up to 240 grit in preparation for browning with Homer Dangler browning solution. All was going well until I started on the frizzen, which as most of you know, is harder than a mother-in-law's heart. I'm assuming I need to de-temper it, for lack of a better...

I appreciate the compliments guys, and I'm flattered, but Scout's honor, this is my first carving/gun. If you look at my carving tools, they're all brand spanking new  I am not a stranger to hand tools, such as planes, scrapers, files, and the like, but no carving tools. I just get...

Thanks to all for all the workbench advice  As soon as I get home I will do my best to completely bury the bench with all of the aforementioned items. I don't want to look like a novice ya know :rotf:

It's called a Gyro-Jaw http://www.rockler.com/gyrojaw-pivoting-vise-and-clamp-jaw-clamp-the-un-clampable Here it is in action. It's the best thing I've found for this sort of clamping.

    First Build - continued

Well, the average garage temperature has dropped below 100°, and I finished some projects for the wifey, so I was given permission to get back after it. I cut out the dovetails for the front and back sights. I also drilled the vent liner hole: Then, after spending countless hours...

Best way to drill the ramrod channel?

I bought the bit that TOW sells. I do not recommend this bit at all. It's not sharp, and it's hard to sharpen, and won't stay sharp. I did everything right, and the bit strayed off course almost immediately and ended up punching a hole in the belly. I believe you need a brad point bit...

    First Build Update

I've sorta thought about it, but I better start thinking a little harder. The time is not far off. I'm still trying to figure out what kind of graver(s) to get. In the videos I have, the guys use gravers about 6 inches long. Besides Brownell's, I have not found any sources. They call those...

    First Build Update

Picked me up a jeweler's saw...makes things much easier. Here's the semi-finished patch box. I think it came out OK. Ignore the Phillips screws, they were all I had  One of my shop dogs....

    First Build Update

Thanks Keith, I'll try that. I also need to get a jeweler's saw. When using the hacksaw, there's just too much filing going on!

    First Build Update

Howdy! I finished the muzzle cap and started on my sight and patch box. I actually ordered a sight with the kit, but decided to try and make my own instead: Here's the muzzle cap. My camera finally died, and here's the last pic she took, fuzzy and all.... Good thing the wife has...

    Rifle #3....Unfinished

Truly, truly remarkable! How does one even begin to learn how to engrave like that? I'd be happy if I could engrave my initials on the barrel....

    First Build - stock shaping

Hi Beaver T, It's just a movable wooden support I made to reinforce the stock while I sand near the edges. I just slide it up and down the channel as needed.

    First Build!

Thanks to all for the advice. I'll see what I can do about removing the hump from the tang. If it's going to affect the angle of the tang screw dangle too much, I'll take off what I can and leave well enough alone  Thanks again for all the help!
