    A few cleaning questions.

I have been using Track of the Wolf's black powder/bore cleaner with great results, I plug the touch hole and squirt a few ounces down the bore, plug the muzzle with my thumb and slosh a few times, run about a dozen patches and it is clean, I run a patch with alcohol on it down the bore, wait a...

    Hitting target at 100 yards

I was shooting Sunday with my 45 caliber, 42 inch flintlock and was stretching the range out of my rifle. I am shooting a .440 round ball with.018 lubed pillow patches with a bit of spit on them-(I hold the patches in my mouth while measuring and pouring the charges). The gun shoots great, it is...

    Removing Slight Rust?

I use a rifle case that I flattened (leave the case head be--it serves as a handle), a 30-30 or 30,06 case works but in a pinch you can use just about any caliber. The brass is tough enough on the rust but will leave the finish intact (blueing especially). Put oil on after to protect and to...

    Range Report 1858 Rem (Newbie)

From another member: Don't forget to make sure your caps are tight and in place, there is more of a chance of a chain fire from the cap end than the barrel end of your cylinder. I use the underball wads and they work great, I also use bore butter on my baby dragoon in the cooler months...

lookin for the how to do and what to do

Don't forget to seal the ends of the chambers or use an under wad to prevent chain fires from happening. Other advice is spot on. Have fun with that one.

Buying Scrap Stained Glass Lead - Advice

Heck, there is nothin wrong with you being honest about the use of the lead, I think if people want to be on the left, I take it upon myself to try to set them straight. I work around a ton of libs in my perfession and every once in a while people seek me out, usually in a back hall where their...

    Genuine query here.

As a bit of a side note, I was talking to a fellow that said he shoots lots of competitions with his buffalo blackpowder rifles and he said he uses 3 or 4 grains of bullseye to get the main charge "started". I asked him what was wrong with blackpowder and he replied nothing, I just do this...

    Double patch?

Thanks for the info folks, I will use them in a pinch if I have to, I don't want to be stingy. I went out into the garage and found one of my old work shirts that measures about .019 so I cut some 1 1/2" square patches, put them in a plastic bag with bore butter and a table spoon of vegetable...

    Double patch?

Would there be anything wrong with shooting a double patch. I have a 58 cal pistol that I usually shoot .020 patches through- My friend gave me some .010 lubed patches from his rifle box because he shoots .015 from his Hawkins, he bought the thinner ones by mistake.

    BIG bore pistol

    My new (to me) rifle

Many thanks, I don't hunt now days but I left the option on the table in case I get back into it. I have a CVA 58 cal. Mountain rifle that I took a few deer with back in the 90's but I stopped hunting when I was almost shot twice in one season (shotgun-slug) one of the times was on my own land...

    My new (to me) rifle

I posted a few targets from the range last week and here is the rifle that they came from. This is a used 45 caliber 42 inch Green Mountain barrel with a large Siler lock, brass du-dads and a curly maple stock. I hope to get out the range tomorrow, it has been pouring today, so I have been...

    Harpers Ferry 1807

Picked this one up this morning for a Ruger new model single six (one of my clunkers) and a c-note, so I guess I have 300 buck in it. It is a 58 caliber made by Pedersoi that is pretty clean and not shot too much judging from the frizen. I have some .015 patches for my .570 round balls to feed...

    New Rifle Range Reoprt

Howdee folks Well I finally bought a flintlock and sped to the range for some shooting time. I picked up a used custom gun that is a 45 cal. Penn rifle, 42 inch barrel, Large Siler Lock, and brass fixins. This was my first time shooting a flintlock (lots of experience with the cap guns  )...

3F or 4F for the main charge?

Sorry guys, I have a 45 cal and will be shooting round ball with it. I thought I might try to use 3f for both priming and main charge. I have a Siler lock and the flash hole is standard at this time, I could open it up a little if need be but I plan to work the rifle as is as much as I can, I...

3F or 4F for the main charge?

I was wondering what your thoughts were about a target load for your flinter. I am getting all my ducks in a row and finally found a source of Goex. I will be going to the range this weekend to try out the new rifle. Thanks to all of you.

Looking at flintlocks, 36 or 45 caliber? -more

I guess I have some homework do this weekend. I am leaning toward U.S.A made new or maybe used. I sure do appreciate all the help on this issue. I will look over my options and “choose wisely”. I am not in a hurry; I like to weigh all my options before I buy. Thanks again. Big Jim
