If you were going to buy a flintlock for target..

Just for the record, I totaly agree with Mike here. If you want a really good rifle, custom built is the way to go. The GPR is just what came to mind first. (the easy standard answer for "what gun should I buy?" :o )I'm the one who mentioned "inexpensive". It wasn't in the origional post. Jeff

    Ball bag

I made this one, I need to make a plug for it. it's just rawhide, stitched with rawhide. make it as big as you want, fill it full of pea gravel or whatever while it is still wet. let it dry, and shake out the pea gravel. This one holds 50 .54 balls. It's crude, first one I made...

Preferred means of attaching a powder horn?

I like my horn rigged above the shooting bag, attached to the bag strap, like stumpkillers third picture down. I recently wrapped a thin brass rod around the front end of my horn in the strap grove, twisted it together tight, and put a loop in the top, cause I got sick if the leather loop coming...

If you were going to buy a flintlock for target..

If you want relatively inexpensive that is good, I'd suggest a Lyman Great Plains Rifle in .50 nice heavy barrel to hold steady. Needs a longer screw for the set trigger though. I would also like to put a thinner front sight on mine. I'm sure others will chime in with more and probably better...

    Assembling the 1858 revolver.

https://www.vtigunparts.com/ab2240000Equ...al%2C+%2E44+Cal Link above might help. I completely torn down and put back together a 58 once. If I can do it I bet you can. The link above is pretty handy sometimes. If it isnt already in the links page here it probably should be. Good luck, Jeff

    New guy say's hello.

Welcome! Hope you got that name because you own stinky dogs. I'd hate to imagine that it takes three dogs to describe your er... um... fragrance? :hmm: :: This forum is awesome, you will learn a lot. I know I have! Jeff

    Hello

One tip, for future reference... I dont recommend hairspray or starter fluid as a charge in the guns we talk about on this forum. Welcome! Jeff

    new fusil

I tried .570's in my caywood trade gun. .570 ball, and two .017 patches. the patches were still really loose, and my groups from a bench were not very good even at 25yds. I think probably thicker patching would have helped, but I didnt have a combination with me that worked good. Like you, I do...

    GPR wedge problem

I am considering slotting and pinning my keys for my GPR. That way even if they come loose you don't lose them. Seems like an easy enough little project to improve a GPR. Jeff

    Q. about Caywood switch barrels

I have a Caywood NW trade gun that has a 20g smooth barrel and a .54 rifle barrel. I dont figure on changing the barrel every day, but have done it 3 or 4 times at least. Just be careful with the pins. It's not hard at all. I use a finish nail to start them out, then use pliers to carefully pull...

    Flinching?

Hi, I was having the same problem, and still do, to a much smaller degree now. (I started the "flintlock shooting tips" thread in this same index, with this same problem) I was at a match last month, doing my flinch trick, and a guy was watching me. My flint was getting real dull, and I was...

Maybe I'm an Idiot: Barrell Wedge Won't Go Back In

On one of my 60' Army revolvers, I took a file and slightly beveled the sharp edge on the slot in the cylinder pin, where the wedge was catching. Made it a lot easier to put in. I dont see what negative effects it could have. Jeff

    Was Sam a lefty?

My understanding is that the "horse pistols" were to be used on horseback by men holding reigns in right hand and shooting with left. The idea was to make a gun that could be used one handed, and short enough to not be a hassle on horseback. Single action pistols are definitely left hand...

    What was your first muzzloader?

My first was a Cabelas .58 "hawken looking" flintlock left handed. Couldnt make it shoot to save my life. Sold it at a gun show. Wish I had it back now, as I think from this point on, almost all my ML purchases will be flintlocks. Latest gun is a Caywood NW trade gun which I love. Next gun I...

    Cleaning my Flintlock Rifle

On my nw trade gun, I pull the lock, then put my finger over the vent hole. Then pour or spray water, or soapy water, or black solve/water in the barrel, fill it maybe half way. Then I plug the muzzle with my thumb of my other hand, and swish the water up and down the barrel by tipping and...
