    T/C Clean Out Plug?

If the screw is long enough so the threads extend into the breechplug, they may be caked full of crud. With the inside wet with Kroil, try turning the screw "in" a bit. If it goes use an in/out motion to loosen the crud from the thread and it will eventually work its way out.

    Buying BP in Cincinnati-Dayton area?

Another consideration in the cost of powder is the cost of operating a car to go get it. A 4-door sedan will cost in the neighborhood of $.70 per mile. (This is the cost of the vehicle, insurance, maintenance, fuel etc. over a 80,000 mile life) At this rate a 38.6 mile round trip will equal...

Loose nipple on Green Mountain Barrel

M6x.75 has 33.9 threads per inch. M6x1.0 has 25.4 threads per inch. When screwed into a 28 threads per inch hole the metric nipples will spread or squeeze the threads together. Hope this is not the problem. However this was discussed in some detail following my original post on 12/9/2008...

Loose nipple on Green Mountain Barrel

I bought a GM barrel and it came with a nipple with a M6 thread. It will screw into the 1/4 x 28 hole with some resistance the first time and very little after that. M6 is .236 dia. Please verify the thread is correct for your gun.

    Shot loads and buffers?

I used Precision Reloading Spherical Buffer and found the stuff flows like a liquid into shotgun shells. Downside is that adding it can raise the pressure when the load goes through a choke so using safely developed load data is recommended for shotgun shells. Would thint the same would apply...

    Another RB Mold Question

I had a 56 SB. The bore was .564. With a .552 ball it would require a patch on the order of .006 to .008. This size may be hard to find.

Can you use bar stock Ferroceum

My first thought is that the flint shaves off steely sparks directly into the pan while with this material the steel frizzen shaves off Ferroceum sparks away from the pan. A piece of rough steel in the jaw of the lock and a frizzen made out of Ferro.. may be an interesting experiment however I...

    removeable breech plug

I have a flintlock built by RMC Sports that has a Green Mountain barrel with a removable breech plug like those used on in-lines. It also had a laminated stock and a L&R lock. It was pure utility, not intended to be PC or HC.

    different sight for lyman deerstalker

I agree with jdkerstetter. When I used the original "glow" sights the front dot was doubled. I switched to the receiver sight and a covered globe front sight and the eye problem went away. I can see both the sights and the target better than any other rifle I own and as a result it shoots the...

    alox

IIRC alox works great with smokeless powder. The black powder cartridge shooters use a different lube, SPF I think, which is more compatable with the crud the BP leaves in the barrel and therefore easier to clean up. Otherwise you may have better luck if you patched the roundball.

What load combos for Pedersoli 54 cal?

Start by measuring the land and groove diameters. My rifle is a Blue Ridge version of the Frontier. It has a land dia = .538 & groove dia = .549. A .538 land does not leave a lot of room for the patch with a .535 ball. I ended up using a .530 ball with a .012 to .013 patch to make it easy to...

    bore clean solvent

Because the water in my cleaning bucket is turning black I am sure that is where the crud is going.

    bore clean solvent

I use this cleaner. I noticed that when I run the first patch it gets black but if I pour more cleaner on the dirty patch and keep swabing the patch can turn white. Since it removes crud from the cotton, it is effective in also getting the crud out of the bore.

    T/C Hawken

In April I sent a 26"x1" TC .56 smoothbore barrel to Bob Hoyt. He machined it to a .62 rifled bore. My cost was $60 + shipping to his shop. My barrel arrived at his shop 4/15 and I received it back on 5/7, approx. 3 weeks turnaround. He will give you a price over the phone. Ship him the...

    stuck brass brush

I used the corkscrew type tool. Made it out of coat hanger wire. Form the screw part by coiling the coat hanger around something in the order of 1/4 inch diameter so it is big enough to go over the core wire of the brush. File a point on the end. Screw it in as far as it will go. Wrap the...

Amen to what Buck said. Pillow ticking and mattress ticking are, I believe, of different thickness Muslin & denim are other options. I have had good luck with denim.

    Buying powder

Before I retired my employer was paying $.58 per mile as reimbursement for use of a personal car. This meant, to me, that it actually cost me more to operate the car than $.58 per mile. I am sure this cost is now much more so I use $.60 to calculate the cost of driving to a store to buy powder...

opinions on a lyman deer stalker

I have the same rifle and it is my most accurate rifle. It is also light and handy if you tote it up and down the hills and through the brush.
