Pedersoli 1859 Sharps set trigger problems

You have a couple of issues that if it was mine would need addressed. First the lock needs work to have a decent trigger pull without using the set trigger. The set triggers are rather simple and will of coarse need the missing screw replaced. It is most likely a metric size. The spring is a...

Does it fire well. If so you may be looking for a problem rather than having one.

    TRU-OIL problem

I’ve used Tru-oil for many stocks over fourth years and have no problems getting a dandy finish. It can be dull to shiny depending on how you apply it. My technique is to thin it with mineral spirits about half. Then apply very thin spreading with the palm of my hand very briefly to flatten it...

    Rocky Mountain blue bird.

Being the middle of October I cleaned out the bird nesting box’s at the cabin. This weather has the blue birds confused enough that they were laying eggs late. They have left the area without hatching these. IMG_0135 by Oliver Sudden, on Flickr

Personal Care Lubricant for Muzzleloaders-What do you think?

That should be a more expensive solution to a simple problem.

Personal Care Lubricant for Muzzleloaders-What do you think?

Why? Patch lube was perfected over and over again and it still comes back to the simplest things.

Help Selecting a New Rifle (Cap vs Percussion, and more)

On the subject of rifling, the original Hawken is recognized as an accurate reliable rifle with its patent breech and 1/48” rifling. Modern shooters using the least expensive rifles have been critical of both these features. When you consider a flintlock the lock can not be short changed. Look...

Info please with cocking effort on Hawken percussion lock

The rifle that I measured for you that has 15 pounds to full **** doesn’t punch holes in the caps, perhaps your nipple has a narrow edge where the cap seats. My preferred cap is Remington #11 but often CCIs are used with no difference.

Info please with cocking effort on Hawken percussion lock

Maybe I didn’t understand the question but I measured the amount of pull it takes to **** a couple rifles. Both started at about 11 pounds to half **** then one increased to 15 pounds. The other (a Siler kit) went down to 7 pounds to full ****. Both percussion of coarse.

CO2/compressed air to clear flash channel?

Maybe, but a cap produces heat as apposed to CO2 expansion is cold. And a cap is one less thing to mess with, you use them anyways.

Flintlock or percussion for a first purchase?

For bird hunting the Brown Bess will swing like a log, but then you don’t need a gun to hunt Weka. To start I’d see if caps are available and then if they are a percussion will be user friendly and effective. You have some steep country there so consider the weight and length for carrying.

Question for the many builders about lock finish

I believe that the average person is intimidated or overwhelmed by the effort needed to do a proper job. It can also add considerable time which many people don’t want to invest. You are right that original locks did not have the coarse cast finish even on the less expensive locks.

How long does 1’000 caps last for an average shooter

If the gun fires with only one cap per shot then nearly one thousand shots. But if the firearm doesn’t work correctly then you could use them up in a short time. We read about people who pop several caps trying to get a gun to fire then pulling the load. Quality counts.

    Blackening

Then don’t use it heavily, transfer black or what ever you use should be just enough to see. It’s called inletting black but it doesn’t actually do any of the inletting! This is how much it takes to see where to cut. BD12E310-8E5B-48BE-B86A-A8A54392E434 by Oliver Sudden, on Flickr

    Blackening

I bought a small jar of inletting black in 1979 and my instructor told me to cut it with Vasoline. I’m still have a good bit of it as I use very little on a job. A acid brush to apply it and rubbed very thin. Works on walnut, maple, cherry and any wood. Easy to wash off where needed...

    1863 pocket model question

The cylinder stops the bolt from rising to high. When you remove the cylinder that stop doesn’t happen. The hand sticks way out for the same reason. Type of powder has no bearing on it.

    My CVA Hawken Trigger Woes!

You should look at the set triggers as an independent device. With it out of the gun it must work in a clean crisp manner and be adjustable to your needs. That will require good materials, design, and finish. You have no control over the first two so stoning the engaging elements and lubricant...
