    58 vs 54?

Phil, the top item is what I was given. Middle is its 24" by 1 and 1/16" GRRW barrel, which had a powder drum. All other parts were gone. I got the closest matching stock from Muzzleloader Builders Supply and bought suitable parts from Track of the Wolf. I made a flash hole liner and made...

    58 vs 54?

Here is a Leman short rifle originally built by Carl Walker, gunsmith at Green River Rifle Works. It went through a fire about 15 years ago and the barrel was given to me. I rebuilt it as a caplock, with the .54 GRRW barrel, and shot it some. The bore was too pitted to lap smooth so I sent it...

    58 vs 54?

I re-built a short (24" GRRW barrel) Leman That Carl Walker of the old GRRW made, but it was burned in a house fire. It was a .54 and I restocked it and fitted new parts as a caplock, then converted it to a flintlock. The bore was too pitted to lap smooth, so I had Hoyt rebore it to a .58. I...

Hypothetical question re: flintlock and Alliant Black MZ

I liked T7 2F and the Alliant BMZ, though I never shot much of it. The T7 needs a really good patch and/or an overpowder wad. I never shoot these powders except in testing, but they can be entirely reliable and I would trust them to hunt with, even in a flintlock.

Hypothetical question re: flintlock and Alliant Black MZ

I have not kept track of how many CASES of black powder I have shot since 1993, maybe 8 or 10. If 10, that is 250 pounds of Goex, Swiss, Olde Eynsford and GRRW black powder. Charges from 40 to 140 grains in .36, .40, .45, .50, .54 and .58 calibers. Say an average of 70 grains per charge...

Hypothetical question re: flintlock and Alliant Black MZ

My barrels don't have anything stamped on them except my name as builder on the bottom flat.

Hypothetical question re: flintlock and Alliant Black MZ

Nothing. That is not their product, it is Alliant. Discontinued. For information, I do not "mix" powders. I fill my measure with the Triple7 or BMZ with no shaking, then tap it to settle about 5 grains volume and add the black powder (4F, 3F or 2F) on top of that and dump it down the bore...

Hypothetical question re: flintlock and Alliant Black MZ

Hodgdon says the same thing about Triple 7, do not mix powders. But if you call up "Triple 7" and read Hodgdon's loading data about Flintlock, they post to add 5 grains of FFFFg black powder down the bore before the main charge.

Thanks, Scota. That is big news.

Hypothetical question re: flintlock and Alliant Black MZ

Alliant Black MZ was a really good powder, now no longer available. It worked very well in flintlocks as several here have posted, requiring real black powder as a priming charge and a 5 or 10 grain booster first in the bore. Here is a 24" Green River barrel that was made as a short Leman and...

.45 Flintlock Powder Tests including Pyrodex and Triple 7

Here is that silver mounted Bedford with some test groups with several powders. The 35 grain groups are the best I ever shot with the 10 or so .40 rifles I made. The Pyrodex and Triple 7 loads needed thicker patches. (If you hold down CONTROL and hit the + key, you can enlarge the photo so...

.45 Flintlock Powder Tests including Pyrodex and Triple 7

Cheers, Rudyard. All my groups here were shot at 50 yards from bench rest. Nice to hear about your building and shooting. I see I misspelled St. JameS wine. Herb

.45 Flintlock Powder Tests including Pyrodex and Triple 7

Hi, Gordon. Yes, JoAnn's is still here. These groups with a .45 are large, like with my .40's. I don't much care for .40's, just gave my Thomas Oldham sterling silver-mounted .40 Bedford rifle I made to a nephew in Des Moines, Iowa. I much prefer .50 or .54 caliber rifles for accuracy. And...

Breech Plug Too Short In Barrel

I never heard of a threaded 5/8 x 18 hole that deep (.7812) in a barrel nor a breech plug longer than 5/8" (.625). I remember an old mountain gunsmith out here in Utah fitting a dime in front of a 3/4 x 16 plug to fill a gap. This could be done with a metal that could be filed to a disc...
