Wife's 1st time M/L shooting

It is a great joy to have a wife who can share your interest in the outdoor sports. Mine loved fishing from the day I introduced her to it and she frequently puts me to shame. As far as guns are concerned, during her career working in banks, there were a few occasions she ended up looking at the...

    A steel shot what if?

[/img] This was a nice Ithaca 37 12 ga. full choke, after running some steel shot through it. It is one of several I have seen. Paul

    A steel shot what if?

If you haven't kept up with modern shotgun use, running steel shot through a barrel with any kind of choke will result in a nice bulge in the barrel. My son & numerous others I have seen have ruined their barrels. Barrels must be reamed out to cylinder bore if to be used for steel shot. Paul

Proper Steps In Applying Aqua Fortis

A friend of mine liked an AF stain job so much he tried to do it on a piece of furniture he had built. Bad results. Further research indicates that AF reacts (colours)(sorry, Cdn.spelling) differently on each different piece of wood. Luckily, gun stocks are 1 piece of wood, so most of the time...

    Cast on by bending

Steam bending using raw wood, uniformly shaped, is still an iffy thing. At best, you are still going to put a lot if moisture into the wood which will mess up the finish. At the worse, you'll end up with a new 2 piece stock. If you can do it by removing some wood, your safety margin would go up...

    Stock Care

As a long time builder of quality furniture, I can attest that more problems with wood finish are caused by 'care & feeding' of the wood then most other reasons. Some oil finishes like BLO & non polymerized tung oil do benefit from a light re-application that is well rubbed out with a soft...

    flintlock redo

The problem with sanding old finish is it quickly 'loads up' or clogs. This usually results in pressing harder to try to keep the sandpaper cutting. That results in loss of control. See where I'm going? Scrapers work much better. Metal scrapers come in a limited number of profiles, but can be...

Need help analyzing my first outing

"I'll see if I can get a punch the same size as my pre lubed patches" If you are going to use thin leather patches which wrap around the ball, that is OK. If you are going to try the 1/8" thick leather wad as I suggested, they must be bore size. Paul

Need help analyzing my first outing

I have a set of round leather punches, one of which just fits my .58 barrel, so I just punch out a supply from scrap leather approx. 1/8" thick. I lube them with olive oil (the cheap stuff). If they are started flat, they go down that way. I made a mistake one time & punched some one size larger...

Need help analyzing my first outing

My new Rice barrel .58 cal. had the same problem of cut/burned through patches. I tried many of the suggestions from this forum, but had the best results using a lubed leather wad. My groups tightened up & patches became almost re-usable. I have nowhere near the experience as many on the...

    Game Bag

+1 on Roundball. Back when I lived where there were 'real' squirrels to hunt, I always dressed/cleaned them on the spot & put them in a plastic bag to keep them clean. One less cleaning job when I got home. The good part was while quietly cleaning the first one I would often have to stop &...

thoughts on making an SxS shotgun

W.R. Brockway's book Recreating the Double Barrel Muzzle-Loading Shotgun would be a good place to start. Try TOW. There were some excellent posts here on the subject a couple years ago, if you can find them. Hopefully, someone will be able to post the links. I've been on the lookout for a nice...

Use of a wad on a 50 cal rifle

In my new Rice .58 jeager barrel, I was having lots of problems with burnt/cut patches & not so good accuracy. After trying all the new-barrel break-in suggestions from this site, I punched some leather wads which I tried, lubed, under a PRB. Groups tightened right up & patches were good enough...

    Flint lock plans

I recently was cleaning out old files & came accross a set of 6 drawings by Bill Newton of old, original locks. Flint & percussion. One is of a flintlock pistol lock 1776, by Ketland and Company. Each drawing shows assembled lock, inside & out. The lockplate by itself and an exploded view...

    WTB......... wood

Mike, I replied to your ad in the classifieds, but haven't had a responce. I am a custom furniture builder with a number of fancy wood scraps squirrelled away that I would be glad to share if I knew what size(s) you need. Don't worry about my home, I will be in the states in a couple weeks &...

    Scored some lead today

Wife & I finally agreed on the remodel of our bedroom & ensuite. After getting all the drywall & ceramic tile off the wall in the shower, & then breaking up the poured-in-place base, I found the pan to be sheet lead. After getting it out and looking it over, I found, written on the bottom,'4ft...
