Any point to thin wad between powder and PRB

Shifty- Your instructions are quite clear. Sounds like something I can do this winter. Inside, of course, where it's nice & warm. It's been time since I worked on an engine, but IIRC valve grinding compound comes in more then one grit. I assume you mean 'fine'. Paul

Any point to thin wad between powder and PRB

J.D. & M.D. - I had tried lapping with scotch-brite, about a hundred strokes with frequent changes. Still no noticeable change. It may take more, or just a bunch more shooting, or just more experimenting with the other variables. Isn't that what makes this so much fun? Right now it's just too...

Any point to thin wad between powder and PRB

Not a rant, just my experience. When trying to work up a hunting load for my new Rice .58 cal. jaegar barrel, I tried 3 different patch combinations,4 different lubes, 3 different balls, & numerous powder loads using 2F & 3F powder. All resulted in badly torn & twisted patches with no...

need help with my cannon build

Hawkeye, Ctrl&+ will enlarge pictures on your screen. Ctrl & - will reduce them again. The trick is to remember how many times you clicked to enlarge, so you know how many times to click for reduce to where you were in the first place. Paul

    Need some help

Send me a PM. I'm pretty sure I have one kicking around & would give it to you for the cost of shipping. - Yes, it is here, offer is good. Paul

    The Continental

I think you'd better hang on to that wife. Any women that would buy her husband a cannon barrel is a keeper. Paul

Where to buy old worn out files

Even cabinet makers use (and wear out) files when working with plastic laminate. Just another possible source. P.S. A box of doughnuts makes a great 'trade' item in most shops and just might get you more files then you can use. Paul

    moose and black bear hunt

Yup!,the first moose I ever shot, I was alone. He was directly accross a small river from my camp when I shot him. Luckily, he was only about 20 meters from shore when he went down. Only took 7 hours to break him down, drag him piece by piece to the canoe, & 3 trips to ferry him accross to camp...

    Improving cleaning jag

Plinker, Thank you, that was exactly the post I was looking for. Seems like whenever I try to find something in the 'search', it doesn't work all that well for me. Guess it could be due to limited computor skills. Paul

    Improving cleaning jag

The 'Track' jag is the one I have. Guess I really don't have to worry about this one. Paul

    Improving cleaning jag

My apologies for bringing up an old subject. I've only seen it once, but can't find it in the search function. The post talked about reducing the diameter of the 2 back ridges of a cleaning jag to enhance the bunching up of the cleaning patch while being withdrawn from the barrel, resulting in...

    Hogs

Some twit here in Manitoba was raising russian boars. Of course, some of them got loose. DNR has declared them a nuiscence (sp?) & should be shot whenever & wherever found. They are surviving quite well & -40 temps are not uncommon in our winters. Paul

    Sidelocks and pellets

Pellets only come in a couple standard sizes which gives you only a few mathamatical possibilities for load variation. Most, if not all, traditional MLs have a couple sweet spots where they are most accurate with a specific powder load. You have to experiment, using powder, to find those sweet...

    How's this finish for walnut?

Always try a new finish, going through all the steps to a complete finish, on scrap wood first. Preferably on a piece the stock came from. If this is not possible, try the barrel channel. What you suggest is often done with analine dyes of various colours to try to 'pop' the grain or enhance...

    Finally Finished

Thanks mike. The butt pad was not quite the same as the one I used as a template. So, I thought I could just sand the pad off. NOT! The gun is still a work in progress, but moose season approaches and some things will just have to wait until after. Paul

    Blown Patches

Mike, those patches actually look pretty good compared to what mine were. I'm shooting a new Rice .58 jaegar w/round bottom rifling, trying both .570 Speer balls & home cast .575s. I tried several lubes & a variety of patches, all with the same resulting patches & shots all over the board with...

    Muzzleloader Season

Manitoba has 7 distinct deer zones with many similarities & some differences in deer season. My area (most of southern MB) is Archery Sept3-Nov 11, Youth muzzleloader Oct 22-Nov 11, Muzzleloader is Oct 29-Nov 11, General rifle is Nov 12-25. We're usually in to winter by then. Moose is similarly...

    Finally Finished

Not a problem. 2 small fingers in the back hook, middle finger on the front, fully support the trigger finger to set the trigger and then gently touch the front trigger. For me, a perfectly comfortable hold. But then, I do have large hands. Paul

    Finally Finished

Now, if I can get the pictures Wow! I did it. This is my third attempt at this style stock. Definitely not PC/HC, but what I wanted for hunting. The design was modified from a commercial aftermarket stock that I put on my centerfire. I had to change drop of comb & butt from a scoped...

Any particular goals for 2012 fall Hunting season?

My son & I are flying out to the Manitoba bush for a week's moose hunt the 29th. He with his bow & me with my newly completed .58 flinter. A bit of a 'bucket list' for both of us. Haven't done the picture thing here yet, but hopefully I'll have some more incentive when we're back. Paul
