Blanket Rifle Case and Short Starter Holster changes

For those who enjoy the satisfaction of making changes to or upgrading their gear, I'll post these images of some work I just did. I got a long brown-striped blanket rifle case for a great price on Etsy and liked how the colors complemented the brown stripes of the straps for my powder horn and...

Upgraded to a Nicer Flintlock: "JP McCoy" .45 cal

A few years back I started messing around with an inexpensive flintlock and posed the question whether it would be Fun or Frustration? (click for old link). Over time, it turned out to be both -- it was "fun" to tinker with to try and improve its reliability, but it was also "frustrating" when...

    New flintlock rifle question

Some guns have tapered ramrods, where the bottom 8" to 10" are a smaller diameter than the upper section. My old EAA Kentickian (entry level gun) has a 3/8" section up top, but below the bottom thimble it tapers to 5/16". But you also said it was a "custom" gun -- so for what you paid for it...

    Need 1/2" x 48" Hickory RR blank

Check out this site... October Country, Link to Listing of Hickory Ram Rods (click here) with the 1/2" size listed. There was a post about the high quality of these on here about a month or so back, and I was really pleased with the 3/8" one I got. Good luck. Old No7

Correct Use of a Knapping Hammer

Really good info all; again, I thank you! And then I found this online... There may be a little "lag" before I try that method... :headslap: Old No7

Correct Use of a Knapping Hammer

Really good info posted here... Thanks all! :hatsoff: I've got that same tool that Stumpkiller showed, but so far I've only used it to tighten the flints in the lock. I'll have to try that and the copper pressure tool too. Tight groups! (Or should I say "Sharp flints!") Old No7

Correct Use of a Knapping Hammer

Thanks to all for the replies so far -- so much to learn! Which is why I come here! :hatsoff: It's an old Euroarms "Kentuckian" in .44 cal (click for link to old posting) which takes small 5/8" x 3/4" flints. Years ago, back when I first posted about getting it (or not) for only $220, the...

    T/C Hawken Advice

Correct. And here's an image of various breech designs found online that Zonie has posted on this site before; with the T/C breech at the bottom left... See the rounded terminus of the smaller-diameter patent breech? T/C sells a "Fouling Scraper" that matches that shape and fits in there to...

Correct Use of a Knapping Hammer

Long-time percussion shooter here, getting back into the trial & tribulations with a flintlock after a couple of years hiatus... Believing that there is "No such thing as a stupid question other than the one 'not' asked...", I'll put this question out there for replies, as I'm thinking the...

    1860 + 1862 + Memorial Day = ........

1860 + 1862 + Memorial Day = A Great Afternoon at the Range After I had properly paid my respects to the fallen this Memorial Day this morning, it was time to proceed to the range and make some smoke this afternoon... It was a driz-mal afternoon here in Maine -- drizzly, with dismal gray skies...

    Huge Crown? Cone?

I coned my T/C .45 Cherokee using my twin's "Joe Wood's tool" and there was no negative impact on the accuracy at all. If it shot any better, then it was because I had more confidence in the rifle and/or the patched ball entered the rifling easier, rather than being punched-in with the short...

    T/C peep fit?

If your TC Hunting Tang Sight has the space between the base and sight body like those shown here, it was made for a Hawken or Renegade. But it will fit a Cherokee (shown) or Seneca as well, as I did that. If there is "so space" and the sight body fits flush to the base, then it was the style...

    Frizzen refacing

Sounds to me like your frizzen is too soft... I just sent a soft Euroarms frizzen to Earl (BP gunsmith in link above) and he did a very nice job at hardening it. And he improved the rollover too, so it has a good "snap" to it now too. I highly recommend Earl K for his expert service, quick...

    Earl Kathan

And I just sent him a Euroarms frizzen that needed hardening. He did that, and also lightly tuned/tweaked the nose of it to smooth the rollover. His work was done fast, with an e-mail back to me to advise it was coming back and I couldn't be any more pleased. Earl also promptly responded to my...

    moose milk container

I got a plastic squeeze bottle like those used for ketchup, mustard or syrup, and it had a short 1.5" nozzle, with a snug-fitting cap on a retainer too. Cost me all of $2, but I can't remember where I got it. With spring/summer coming (oh but NOT soon enough!) you may find something where they...

    Euro arms

I'm Flint62's twin... One just sold on GunBroker for $355, and that's the 2nd one I've seen sold there within the last 4 months. If you can get it for a good price like I did, buy it!!! Try 0.433" balls and 0.020" patches with 3F real black. Tight groups! :hatsoff: Old No7
