    screwdrivers

I buy cheap wooden handled screwdrivers and hollow grind the tips....nearly all these screwdrivers are plenty hard and have never found a soft tipped one. Altogether, I've got approx. 50 reworked screwdrivers and at least one will be suitable for a proper slot fit. It amazes me that many...

Have shipped many blanks via USPS and just use a felt tipped marking pen, writing the address on the wood. The USPS clerk told me to write the info as if I were using a paper envelope......Fred

    Frizzen Tempering?

Have hardened and tempered a few frizzens and all sparked profusely . Took a section of pipe that a frizzen could fit in, attached an end cap that had 4-5 1/4 dia holes drilled through . The frizzen was wired through the pivot hole, stuck in the pipe, heated until orange red w/ a Mapp Gas...

    Can't Remove Breech Plug!

My Starrett toolmaker's vise w/ 1/8" thick copper jaw shims holds the bbl tightly and copper shims are used on the plug's bolster and a very large wrench is used along w/ 2' of pipe. The tightest fitting plug is no match for this setup. The question arises.....does the plug have to be removed...

Best way to go about it.

    Browning a barrel

I've always used LMF and like the reddish brown color and what I call a medium texture. The browning process using LMF is easy if sparse applications are applied. It doesn't take much LMF to achieve the desired color and texture. I usually applied 3 or possibly 4 coats of LMF depending on the...

    Jewelers saw blade

During my tool and diemaking apprenticeship, I very rarely used a jeweler's saw...in the real world it's the slowest tool to use and time is money. A design that mandated the use of a jeweler's saw was changed so a faster tool could be used. Yes, the toolroom had jeweler's saws but they were...

    Lock Bolts

I've always used 2 lock bolts on PA LRs.....the rear is an #8-32 and the front is a #6-32. As an aside. the tang bolt is also an #8-32. Larger sized bolts aren't necessary. When building Bucks County LRs, the web at the breech was 1/16" and at the muzzle was 5/32". Because of the 1/16" web...

    Glue advice

Have 2 glues in the shop....the Elmers is for household items and the super glue is for cracks in gunstocks. The longest stock crack I've had was an 8"-9" long web crack that started at the muzzle end. First stained the crack , let dry and then w/ the bbl waxed applied the super glue , quickly...

    MBS patchbox kit

I've made mainly 2 styles of Pboxes.....normal 4 pc and the side opening. While the 4 pc boxes only have to have the finial and lid bent, the sideplates are flat w/ only a slight curve which is filed on. The side opening Pboxes naturally only have the lid bent but not always to the stock...

    toe plate ... need advice

Have installed metal toeplates on most of my builds. mostly brass but some steel {Hawkens}. The wood grain at the toe many times forms a triangle just waiting to be cracked off. So when installing toeplates, longer screws are used....short screws can be in the cracked off toe triangle and...

    Stock refinishing. First coat...?

As a beginning coat I've always used 2 wipe on/wipeoff coats of LMF Sealer w/ a complete dry between coats. Then 2 coats of a very different finish are applied and that's it. The resulting finish looks like there isn't any finish on the stock.....Fred

    Nosecap for Kibler SMR

I've always made Mcaps from .040 thick sheet brass or steel if iron mounted, w/ a separate. soldereed in 1/8" thick end plate which is installed inside the sleeve. The cast, purchased Mcaps have slightly over 1/16" thick walls which on a very petite LR leave very little wood to attach to...
