    Maple or walnut?

I was thinking of going to plain maple next, but after that post............I'm not.

    Powder Holder?

I have heard them labeled as such, but I have also noted the setup of 12 as commonly depicted. So, would any quantity less or in excess of 12 be called apostles? I do not know.

    L&R Lock

I have had to re-do 2 L&R locks because of bridle issues. One lock I saved by just machining a new bridle from scratch and spotting the bridle fasteners from the lockplate face. They just seem slapped together to me. Granted, some of the old stuff was no better, but in this age of modern...

    Securing the buttplate

Thanks Bookie- This build is full of surprises. The lockplate is so long, that the rightside lock panel runs parallel to the bore, but the leftside is parallel to the tapered barrel flat. The sliding pan must have a uniform border so the right side barrel flat is taken to bore parallel the...

    Securing the buttplate

Late 1500's/1600 English Snaphaunce project, lock from the Rifleshoppe (English musket #579). How was the buttplate secured? Would screws be incorrect/uncommon? If nailed, what head configuration? If secured with screws, what would the heads look like? Thanks-

    Cane powder measures

My shooting buddy is a Naturalist, and we were just talking about cane grass vs. bamboo. Cane grass would of course be PC, but bamboo and cane grass are quite different. Bamboo draws silica into the structure and has fantastic strength, and also resists splitting if the section is cut to expose...

    No Entry Thimble

Excellent- Thanks, guys. It sure will be nice to not have to inlet an entry thimble on something for a change, and be historically correct! :hatsoff:

    ordering from the Rifle Shoppe

TRS appears to be cleaning up their act. I am now into the "older" stuff, and the service has been no slower than TOTW. I received lock castings, and some spare springs that were ordered later within weeks, not months. In fact, TRS only owes me a triggerguard, and I have ordered a bunch of stuff.

    No Entry Thimble

I cannot really tell how the entry hole for the ramrod is done from the images I have. Were they done typically with a curved transition, or perhaps more of a 90 degree wall at the entry location. I suppose that the proper (PC) way did not change from the very old arms to the 1700's, so...

    No Entry Thimble

Question- What are the correct ways to shape the wood when not using an entry thimble? English Snaphaunce (TRS) is the arm in question.

    one big rant on supplies

Sounds like Dixie............. :hmm: I just went through a similar "patent breech" issue with them. The article sent was in no way, shape, or form as depicted in the catalog. TOTW is my primary..TRS is my new sickness..MBS in a pinch...Dixie only as a last resort...Chambers for locks...and...

    olde tyme smoothe bore accuracy

One of these days...I should make a smoothbore test arm. Get a nice slab of wood, inlet the barrel and the lock, and securely anchor the assembly to a concrete bench. I will precisely control all the shots with consistent weight/volume. The projectile and powder will be subject to our modern...

    Rust blue

I use distilled water, and a stainless steel container. I initially used a propane setup, but even with minimal heat, the water boils off too quickly. I purchased one of those 2 "burner" food service electric stoves from a resturaunt supply house, and now use it exclusively. I boil everything...

    Rust blue

I rust blue quite often, and have been pleased with the "Herters Belgian Blue". The Pilkington RB formula works equally well...but costs about 40(?) times as much by volume. The LMF browning solution used as a "rust blue" is not the same as the real article. Genuine rust bluing is a wet...

    L&R Single Set Trigger Question

I install the trigger with a slight gap between the bar and the sear arm. .010" to .0312" would be the range. If you install it with contact, it is difficult to determine if any pressure is being exerted, as this would be incorrect. With the vertical acting sear, the engagement surfaces of the...

    L&R Single Set Trigger Question

That trigger would probably work fine. The bad thing is that the L&R set trigger plate is so big, and after inletting,so much wood is removed. If you opened up the slot in the L&R plate and eliminated or hid that 90 degree "leg" of to the side, you could just install a single trigger from...

    L&R Single Set Trigger Question

I had similar issues a while back with the L&R single set trigger. There are actually quite a few different designs that produce the same results, and L&R just happened to choose one that requires a degree of precision..now, I am not saying that L&R products lack precision in manufacture...

    building a lock from castings

I can wait until you get to it on the class..but are you hardening/tempering the entire frizzen evenly, or mainly concentrating on the upper/face area? Great class, I practiced making some springs like you posted and they worked.

    Snaphaunce Lock Build

At this point, I am cleaning up all the spring castings in preparation of the next steps. I will post more images after the weekend, as I should be able to squeeze in a few hours on Saturday.
