ID help on a 1863 Springfield

Nope, not looking in the wrong spot. I'm well aware that the breech plug screws in. This particular rifle also has another seam well in front of where there should be one. Are you aware of what a patent breech is because this particular rifle has one.. Please refer to the picture just posted by...

ID help on a 1863 Springfield

Question. Because the barrel I used to build mine has a patent breech. In the circled area my old eyes almost see a seam where the barrel was made in 2 pieces. Is it my eyes or is there a seam ? Original barrels weren't made that way but some reproductions were.

ID help on a 1863 Springfield

"dated for 1864, with brushed bright (as original) 40in. barrel," This part of the description tells me the seller knew it wasn't an original gun produced at the Springfield Armory in 1864. And it gets him off the hook because he never said it was unless you had other conversations where he...

ID help on a 1863 Springfield

The V, P and Eagle stampings on the barrel don't look right to me. They're all over the place rather than in line and in the proper order. Also has a screw holding the sling swivel on. Not bashing it by any means. Looks like a fine shooter. In fact my own until I find an original is a Numrich...

    Civil War foraging shotgun

I've never heard of any legitimate 1861-1865 Springfields made new as smoothbores. And why would they ? There were plenty of Model 1842 muskets still in inventory that were already smoothbore and could easily be issued as needed for providing food.

How to ship a BP Pistol

I have never sent anything whatsoever through the USPS where they asked me what I was sending. Only the usual "liquid, perishable, etc questions. Frankly it's none of their business. If you're buying insurance for the package they do have a place to list the contents if I remember correctly. In...

    Brown Bess kit

Here is a Nicholson East India Company Bess dated 1779 that was owned by my 7th generation Grandfather who was Sgt Seth Brooks of the Acton Mass Minutemen. He was at the Concord bridge April 19, 1775. Obviously not with this particular musket which was made 4 years later. And another EIC Bess...

FOR SALE Louis smith contemporary flintlock

That is a thing of beauty by one of the best builders who ever lived. It's been my pleasure to see several of his guns since we are friends with his daughter. Someone needs to jump on this immediately. It will be years before another comes on the market. Here's one a close friend owns.

Outstanding ! The wife and I are good friends of his daughter. We live in Limestone Tennessee. She still has a couple of his rifles. They never will be for sale. This is a killer deal in my opinion.

M1842. 1855 dated Harpers Ferry Musket

Good score ! You know why there's a letter "Q" on the bottom right ? I just got one myself from an online auction but mine is cut down, Springfield Arsenal and sadly no letter Q. Oh duh... lol Just realized we've discussed this on a different forum. Carry on.

    Really?

I use Ebay often to get a rough idea of the value of something but never use the asking price. If you go to "sold items" and search you'll see what the real world value is. Some stuff I see on there has been on there for over a year and is never going to sell at the asking price. I've also seen...
