    Priming the pan first

At some point in history, on some battlefield or in some garrison, some guy probably primed his pan and his lock failed as he was ramming his charge home. A million more guys got away with it, just like the millions who get to work safely every day vs. the guy who doesn’t. It’s up to you to...

    who shoots 54 Cal with 3F ?

I do. I use 3f for everything except my muskets. I find it takes longer for gunk to accumulate around touch holes, nipples and drums when I use 3f than when I use 2f.

    Brown Bess mainspring

I don’t know who Jim Caso is. VT as in Vermont or is that a company?

    Vent/Touch Hole Pick

    That’s pretty cool!

    New perdersoli results

Looks like you’ve found a great load. I own a Pedersoli Blue Ridge that shoots well like yours. It has its problems for sure that I’ve had to work around or live with, but it also made me pretty handy at troubleshooting flintlocks. Great shooting!

    TVM Iron Pennsylvania?

    That’s a nice gun. Love the finish! It’ll be a head-turner.

The Brown Bess in combat- how effective was it ?

Interesting discussion here. On the subject of the Bess bayonet, I strongly suspect the shape had more to do with ease of manufacture and durability than anything else. ‘Easy to make and hard to break’ is more plausible than ‘was designed to kill you by penetrative E. Coli’.

    Brown Bess mainspring

Thanks, Hawkeye. This appears to be new parts cast from originals? It’s a great place to start looking for something that’ll work for me.

    Brown Bess mainspring

Does anyone know if there’s a modern/repro mainspring that will fit an original India pattern gun made in 1779? Thanks.

    Look at this mess

Thank you sir, the last thing I needed to go with my insomnia was a bad case of the church giggles. Looks like I'll be spending what's left of the night in the guest room.

    Old Belgian musket help

Thank you both for the information! I had no idea these things were assembled like mutts from new and original parts. Something new every day. I think this gun is pretty cool.

    Old Belgian musket help

Do you know if it could be dated by the serial number?

    Old Belgian musket help

I picked this up a few years ago in the bargain bin at a gun shop. It's obviously a Belgian knockoff influenced by the Charleville design but that's all I know. The makers mark was in use for over a hundred years. It has a thick patina all over except the underside of the barrel and the ramrod...

    The dreaded clean bore shot

I could swear I read about it and recently, too. There was lots of grumbling or at least it was conveyed that way. Maybe someone else knows what I'm talking about because I sure don't. Congrats on winning. I used to compete but never in any ML events. Never been to one in fact but that's gonna...

    The dreaded clean bore shot

Thanks everyone for the input and taking the time to reply. Wasn't there recently a kerfuffle at a match event of some kind where the competitors were not allowed to do a fouling shot before scoring began?

    Priming Flask

My 1779 EIC Bess has a vent liner that was installed by the guy who sold me the gun. He told me the touchhole was too worn for use when he got it. The rest of the metal is fine considering the age. It's just a shooter now but I paid a "just a shooter" price for it. Just an anecdote so take it...

    Bought a TVM Virginia

Nice! I’m considering TVM for my next gun which will be a squirrel rifle.

    New caplock rifle (pics)

Gotta wonder if that was necessary. Let’s just say I’m really glad I don’t have to shoot that same load! Ha.
