What will more powder get you?

Well at 80 grains in a .54 you're right about in the middle range of powder. Not many would consider it light, nor would people consider it a heavy load. So would you gain a whole lot more with 20 or 40 more grains of powder? You would gain some, but if its not enough to make a difference...

    CCI caps

Adui, What other problems have you discovered? I've polished the internals. I learned that grease is a no-no in the internals of a lock. If it's not the caps I'm stumped.

    CCI caps

Has anyone else been getting failure to ignite with CCI #11 lately? I've got a number of sidelock percussion guns ranging from custom made, T/C, Investarms, and CVA. And they all seem to get a failure to ignite every dozen or so shots. By failure to ignite I mean the first hammer blow does...

I don't like to use a ball starter.

I would prefer not to use a s starter. But some guns just need that tighter fit to perform well. One thing I have noticed is that the softness of the lead makes a big difference in starting. Anything but the purest lead will start tough. I have found that if you can liberate yourself from...

    American Mountain Men

I will respectfully disagree with this advice - up to a point. Don't buy the cheapest gun out there that is likely to give you a miserable experience. But if saving up 4 figures would take too long you can certainly go for something more affordable and enjoy shooting something while you save...

    T/C Hawken accuracy

Dave, The gun should be able to do way better than 6" at 50 yards off a good rest. I just got back from the range with my son and his buddy. My son's friend has the exact gun you describe, .45 T/C Hawken. This was the first time he shot it after getting the rifling re-cut by Bobby Hoyt...

    American Mountain Men

AMM is just like the rest of the world. Mostly great people, occasional jerks. But I ran into that in the broader world of buckskinning too. I pursued it for a while, but I just couldn't find the sacrifice it required worthwhile. While I was interested in learning primitive survival, I was...

    Long Range PRB over 54?

There's an outfit called October Country that has rifles of .62 caliber and up. They have slooow twists, like 1:104" and Forsyth rifling. They are meant to shoot a big PRB at velocities around 2000 fps or better. That is the kind of PRB gun you would want for 150 to 200 yard shots. You...

    Suprise suprise!

Oh yeah. There can be a lot of confusion in that caliber range. "I have a .45 rifle, what diameter do you recommend?" ".440" "Ok I'll take a box of those. Now I need somethimg for my .44 cap and ball revolver, what do you recommend?" ".454" :headslap:

    CONEHEAD RANGE DAY

Been there done that. Now I just skip the ball puller and go right to trickling in powder from the cleanout (or remove nipple).

    Hope for the future

Sorry. . .Those pictures are from Wisconsin in the November regular 9-day season. That's why it's so warm. It just took me until January to get around to postin' pix.

Do you like shooting a Roman nose style?

The designer probably got it from lookin' at his Gramma. I would think Italians should know a thing or two about Roman nose.

Do you like shooting a Roman nose style?

I had a Pedersoli Kentucky and it didn't bother me at all. It was a .32 though. I do like the looks. I have had a few of those T/C-Cabelas hawken type guns that were nasty cheek punchers. They did not have Roman-nosed combs either. I think the drop at comb and the heel-hoe angle play into...

    Lead

I won't assume SWMBO doesn't have good reasoning, but I don't see why moving would necessitate unloading all that ammo/lead. If my wife were to make a similar demand it would only be because I already insisted on her unloading her books, in which case I would call it a very fair deal and put...

    Why is it?

Hanshi, I confused. You say seating can be made easier by polishing the crown. By seating do you mean starting the ball in the muzzle? I always thought seating referred to the final step of getting the ball firmly planted on top of the powder. I don't see how a polished muzzle would help.

    Burnt patches

I meant no offense Dutch. By preserving patches I only meant that they need to survive the trip down & out the bore in order to have any accuracy. If patches are shredded you likely are not seeing the full accuracy potential. As for the barrel being greasy and smelling like a fry-cook: I am...

    Why is it?

"Frankly, I do not believe a palm bruising start contributes to fine accuracy" False dichotomy. It is not like using a starter means abusing your palm. Sometimes you just need that oopmh to get it past the muzzle. To further distinguish the fine points of muzzleloading: There are perhaps 3...
