First shot always a flyer problem...

Bili is right...clarification please. What is the actual group size. If the group is pie-plate size, I'm not sure how one could determine if the first shot is low...so there's a communication breakdown here. More information please. Having said/asked that...there's no doubt that a pie plate...

    Navy Arms .58 Hawken Hunter?

I made a "Buffalo Hunter" out of a Miroku "Zouave" when I was young and dumb. Didn't come out that great. It is a nice, short, nasty little gun, but I find I much prefer a 30" barrel for balance and handling, and rarely (never) use it. I do shoot it sometimes. But it was my first muzzle loader...

Shotgun Slugs in .69 Musket, getting ready to go

Keep casting around for the solution. ;)

    Issue with a flying flint

Can you wiggle the flint around, when it is clamped down? Any play at all? That would confirm the Land theory, which makes the most sense.

    American Jaeger

Native Americans had a strong preference for long barrels, and in fact insisted/demanded (on) them. That would most likely account for no shorties found at such sites. I would guess that short barreled, Jeager type rifles would be found far away from the frontiers, in towns and villages, or on...

First shot always a flyer problem...

I don't believe hunting with a fouled barrel is a good idea, especially in wet conditions or even high humidity. Many barrels shoot to a different point of aim, when clean or fouled. Even modern rifles do it. Some rifles don't, but I think they are a small minority. I always sight my hunting...

Shotgun Slugs in .69 Musket, getting ready to go

With my hot dipped minne' bullets, the bee's wax does not make harder loading, it slides right down, and with subsequent shots, as the bore becomes fouled/smaller, they load the same, effort-wise. I believe any excess wax just shaves off, or displaces, and maintains zero windage. With those...

    Best barrel rust preventer ?

Whatever you use, I think the most important thing is to wait a couple of days after a complete cleaning, and then run a couple patches down the bore to check for any discoloration, and then apply, or reapply your product of choice.

    Navy Arms .58 Hawken Hunter?

Right, my understanding has always been that the "Buffalo Hunter" was the cut-down Reproduction Remington Model 1863 Contract Rifle. There seems to be some confusion here that the Hawken and Buffalo Hunter are the same. ? Perhaps the confusion is mine.

    Try some different flints? :)

Shotgun Slugs in .69 Musket, getting ready to go

Okay, just to clarify, this will be a tear off the end, pour in the powder, then tear off excess paper, and ram down paper-patched slug. ? If so, consider dipping the slug end of the cartridge in hot bee's wax, that way no lube contamination of the powder. My experiments so far, with pure bee's...

    Remington Navy-two powders, two groups.

Again, Brit will be the front man, the PR guy, the whipping boy, for any and all negative responses or comments on the use of a certain un-named propellant. I'm sure he would not volunteer for such a responsibility, but I am in possession of a can of the above un-mentioned propellant, which has...

    Remington Navy-two powders, two groups.

Truth. However, it did feel like my position was the same for each group, and for both groups I felt like I was "on" as far as trigger control, breathing, hold, pace, etc. It did cross my mind though, that firing two more groups could possibly reverse the results. But, I "think" it was the load...

Turner Kirkland Rifle .40 caliber Percussion Rifle

A "wall hanger" would be a sad fate for such a nice rifle. Hopefully you would pass it on before doing that.

Turner Kirkland Rifle .40 caliber Percussion Rifle

I hear those have a nice slim barrel, made before it was dictated that barrels had to be a specific, or minimum weight/thickness for a given caliber. Nice rifle.

    Parker Hale Musketoon Quality?

I think most opinions will be "best quality". Wish I had one.

    Navy Arms .58 Hawken Hunter?

I'm thinking that AK has a few more Grizz, and in bigger sizes, (although I did find some giant AK style grizz tracks recently) than Northeast Washington state. Certainly the odds are greater in AK as to a grizz attack, I'm pretty sure I'm more likely to get killed driving to, or from, any of my...

    Navy Arms .58 Hawken Hunter?

Okay, so it is a slug gun. (I'd still be interested in a better description of the rifling) I do like round ball, and again, if I re-bored such a rifle it would be rifled and twisted for round ball. I consider myself a "roundball guy". !!! Shooting slugs is fun too, and my .58's fill that...

    Pedersoli Indian Musket?

I believe my Bess carbine weighs 8.25 pounds. Were some reproduction muskets fitted with a patent breech? Seems that would be unusual. ??

    Navy Arms .58 Hawken Hunter?

Well I'm not really arguing, just teasing. But I do prefer a larger caliber, or bore, in any given barrel size. Now, if argue we must, when I had my Jeager built, I had a choice between .54", .58", and .62" in the barrel profile of my choosing. A .54", in my opinion, would make for a heavier...
