    Fired or un fired??

IF the builder test fired/sighted in the gun, I consider it still to be new. With factory guns, it is only new in the box until the owner fires it. One problem is the old saying about condition descriptions - "one man's "good" is another man's "poor". "Shoots good" can also mean only cracked at...

    Making Flints !

Sounds like you are making English gun spalls rather than the neatly shaped French gun flints. Both make sparks, the French use less raw flint. Enjoy shooting!

    Treen ware

It takes me a couple of hours to saw & carve a yoke. A gutter adze, a large drawknife, a bowl spoon and a very small drawknife are the primary tools. Carving around the neck opening takes a bit of time with the little drawknife.

    Difference In Bags?

A shooting bag is an accessory for a gun and carries what is needed to shoot the gun. (balls or shot, patches or wads, caps or spare flint) A possibles bag is a personal accessory and carries whatever one thinks that they might "possibly" need - compass, snacks, spare socks, keys, sewing kit...

    Shipping box/case

I have have bought two guns from TOW - they came in heavy cardboard boxes & were encased in expanding closed cell foam. TOW wrapped the guns in cellophane & foamed first one side & then the other side so the gun could be lifted out without disturbing/cutting the foam. A builder I know uses a...

    What Wood For A Stock

Pulling stumps was primarily for clearing fields to enable plowing. The stump wood could possibly be used for knees if oak but walnut and maple are not shipbuilding woods. Many texts on shipbuilding show how the sections of trunk & branches were cut for knees. While the gunsmiths at CW indicate...

Is it a grenado or a spherical shot?

PS - the ball in question dates to either Henry Morgan's attack in 1671 or Admiral Vernon's in 1739.

Is it a grenado or a spherical shot?

I have a 3" diameter (same as a 4 pounder) hollow cannon ball with a 1/2" fuse/fill hole. This came out of the river Chargres just below fort San Lorenzo in Panama. Seems small for an exploding shell but a bit big & heavy to be a (hand thrown) grenado. Any thoughts?

Voyage of Discovery — Knowing their location?

Records show that while at Fort Mandan, they used lunar observations to calculate longitude and time. The most complex use of a sextant is to use OLD or observed lunar distance (the angle between sun & moon), a nautical almanack and a lot of higher order math to determine longitude (and...

1849 Colt 31 cal for self defence?

In the days before modern drugs, a slow painful death from infection might be all of the threat needed for a small caliber handgun to be an effective defense. Not so much with today's medical options.

1849 Colt 31 cal for self defence?

As far as I can tell, the 45ACP has always been a smokeless powder cartridge. Perhaps is has been confused with the 45 Long Colt used in single action army revolvers - the 45 Long Colt started life as a black powder cartridge.

Royal Navy Sea Service pistol loading procedure?

I recall doing some research on loading my RN blunderbuss and reading an 18c letter written from a RN Captain to the gunner on the captains' newly assigned ship. Work to be done prior to the captains delayed arrival on board included making x thousand musket cartridges, and much smaller numbers...
