kodaik exp. 58 cal. double rifle

I am no expert on double rifles, but I would be very hesitant to use any bullet or ball that did not fit the bore VERY tight in a double, especially with heavy powder charges. It seems to me that the recoil of firing the first barrel could unseat a loose bullet off the powder charge in the...

    barrel length

I replaced the 28" barrel on one of my TC's with a 32" (50 cal). Seems to hang better, easier to hold steady, to me. On one of my others (my huntin' gun) I use a solid brass ramrod to add extra weight out front, better, but not the same feel. I do like the 28" for a quicker less bulky feeling...

    Why Muzzleloading Barrels so Long?

Ha Ha Ha, I like #7 "Long barrels shorten the distance of the shot". Makes a lot of sense to me :rotf:

    Ramming Ball Without Powder

Thanks for that Zonie... I have often heard that a barrel could/would be damaged from not seating a ball properly, never really understood why. Excellent explanation.

    Ramming Ball Without Powder

I can't see how 4-5 grains of 4f could damage my barrel when I routinely touch off 80-100 grains of 3f with no ill effects. I will continue to use the "blow it out with powder" method until I see proof that it is unsafe. Often pulling a dry ball is not so easy especially if the bore is somewhat...

    Ramming Ball Without Powder

Been there, done that, exactly as Ranger said... Won't say how many times, but it was more than once. :haha: Sometimes the ball won't come clear out if you use too little powder, just add some more, and try again, just make sure to ram the ball down again.

    Another Bore Butter Question

I searched high and low for beeswax till someone suggested a crafts store that sells candlemaking supplies, they have it. Perhaps go to a flea market or crafts show and get some beeswax candles would be another option.

    Sling for my GPR

I have one on a TC Hawken that has a different thimble to use a standard clip-on sling swivel on the front and laces on the butt end. Not sure where it came from, it was on a gun I bought off a member here a while back. Perhaps you could check with TC for the thimble, you would probably have to...

    coating balls?

grzrob... For sure that is the best solution, but due to time, work, weather constraints, I don't shoot as much as I would like to. I also enjoy casting and when I get my hands on a bunch of lead I feel a need to make something out of it!

    powder flask use

I can hold about 20 shots worth of powder in my flask and it fits nicely in my shooting bag. Plenty for hunting or a day walking the hills. More comfortable for me than carrying a bulky horn also with my bag. Any idea if any of the old timers did this, or do you think the flask was only for...

    How To Age Metals

To age or dull the brass on a TC Hawken, I take a used, dirty cleaning patch with powder residue on it and wipe the brass. Repeated applications will make it darker. If you swab the bore between shots, save the dirty patches in a ziplock bag to keep them wet, and wipe the brass after cleaning...

    Paper patched bullets?

I am a little, or maybe more than a little, less than knowledgeable about paper patching so bear with me. I am under the impression that they can only be used with breech loading guns. Can a paper patch be used in a muzzle loader? I would think pushing a snug bullet down the barrel would tear up...

    coating balls?

Thanks for all the replys guys, I think I will try Paul's suggestion of spraying with WD40 before packing them away. Sounds about the easiest and cheapest way to go.

    Mould info

I never tried Kroil, I keep a candle stub with my casting stuff and smoke the mold by holding it in the candle flame for a minute. Works fine on the aluminum molds I use.

    coating balls?

Thanks for the advice! 35,000? Sounds like you need another hobby than casting lead, heheh JK and I thought I should shoot more/cast less, wow!

    shipping goex?

If you are willing to post where you are located someone close by that visits here may be able to use it. I could always use extra powder, if in northern Nevada.

CVA Bore Conditioner and Patch Lube

Are you talking about liquid or paste? I bought a tube of the paste a few years back and don't like it at all. I had been using the old style "Leheigh Valley Lube" for years and could shoot all day without cleaning, and when I did clean, my bore was hardly needing it. With the CVA lube, I could...

    My Christmas Present

I wouldn't worry about the chatter marks in the rifling unless it won't shoot well, but I am betting it will. I have an old CVA mountain rifle that is much rougher than that, so rough my rod chatters when pushing the ball down the barrel. It is a tack driver, and no harder to clean than my other...

    coating balls?

I realize the oxide is toxic, I use an old towel to clean them then throw it away. I was just thinking.... is the oxide caused by moisture, or air? I live in a very dry desert climate so I don't think it would be moisture. Perhaps I could pack them in vacuum freezer storage bags, like the Vacula...

    coating balls?

I generally cast my own balls and bullets, but occasionally find a bargain on store-bought brands at gun shows, etc. I noticed the balls I cast get a powdery white residue on them when in storage for a period of time (I tend to cast in volume). The store-bought balls don't seem to do this. I...
