i need a little help on solder,,,,,,,,,,

Hi Force 44 is very good for this type of repair. As others have said make sure both parts are well cleaned, tin both parts and clamp. I made a clamp for these by cutting a slot in an old hacksaw blade that will fit over the tab on the tenon and will put pressure on the base.

    Rust

After cleaning and dry patches I run a couple of patches with regular automatic transmission fluid on them. ATF is available almost anywhere and a quart will last for years. Never had any rust form in bore.

Would you shoot this 1970's Japan import Tower Flint ?

Never seen one of these with an octagon barrel...wonder if that was changed out with the round one by a previous owner?

    Buyer’s Preference: pre-fired or un-fired?

I would never hand a newly finished rifle to the customer before test firing and rough setting the sights. Want to make sure everything works as it should and sights are close. If something needs changed or fixed I want to do it while it is in my possession. Bad form if the customer has to bring...

In over my head with mystery rifle?

It is much easier to build one from scratch than to make parts fit something that was improperly laid out. My hat is off to you for attempting the project!

    My eyes are going bad!

Red dot sights can be mounted far enough forward so as to not interfere with the hammer. For scopes look at one of the log eye relief ones designed to be mounted on a "Scout" rifle. They mount about 12" forward of the breech and are designed to be shot with both eyes open, won't interfere with...

SOLD FS: Ruger Old Army Stainless

Rock Island Auction is located in Illinois and they have a state law that treats all ML's the same as modern firearms. Several cities such as New York also treat them as such and require an FFL transfer. California considers them as "Modern" firearm since they are not a copy of any particular...

Factory built vs kit build value

The term :Kit Gun" is usually thought of as sub par because so many are poorly assembled by people with little skill and in to big of a hurry. While adequate I never considered "factory" finished guns all that great. A kit gun assembled by a skilled craftsman could be much superior.

    California black powder revolver laws

Not sure if it is a state law or city ordnance (such as LA) but copies of historical pieces such as a Colt 1860 Army are not considered modern firearms and do not require special permits or transfer through an FFL dealer but pistols such as the Ruger Old Army are classified as "a Modern" firearm...

What is it with curved buttstocks?

On small caliber rifles the deep crescent buttplate is fine but on larger caliber hunting rifles I am a big fan of the flat English style buttplate. It helps spread heavy recoil over a larger area.

Challenge in fitting a steel butt plate.

Buttplates are my second least favorite part of a build only followed by entry pipes. Tedious, but resist getting in a hurry. You rush the process and every time you look at it in the future you will regret it.

    Middlesex Village Trading Co

They usually are sent with no touch hole drilled and several have been brought to me to have this done. None were from Middlesex Village but from Veteran Arms. While crude the guns seemed solid and after a bit of work did fire well. As these were to be used by reenactors firing blank loads they...

    Hawken Reproduction

If you are referring to the famous Sam and Jake Hawken who shop was in St, Louis there has never been a documented flinter. There have been a couple found but to the best of my knowledge have been proven altered at some point. The family including father and several cousins were all gunsmiths...

    12 bore rifle twist rate

Many English gunmakers of the mid 19th century found that with heavy charges big bore rifles could only stabilize a heavy bullet with VERY slow twist. 1-90 to 100 seemed to work well. With faster twist to prevent stripping they had to use low powder charges. African hunters of the time...
