Old Belgian SxS cleaned and ready to shoot.

NICE GUN! NICE PIX! NICE REFINISHING ! My first was Belgian. Used it a lot in club matches. I found that Belgian tubes are brazed together to never come loose. English have always soldered, and are more likely to separate. But they sure are lighter weight. Enjoy it!

    R. Southgate Flintlock #484 Help

I have restored aSouthgate rifle for a guy in Tennessee. Solid and authentic enough, but no fine craftsmanship or high quality parts. The name is worth more for some, but far short of even good craftsmanship from today's makers. But then agaain, you could not find the parts and make one for...

All of this misinformation is really getting old

Such was published in Dixie gun works catalog as an old-timer's starting point for working up to the right load. I never tried it myself. 100 grains GOEX 2f always did the job in my 54 GR Douglas barreled Hawken at longer distances. For targets I used lighter loads for each shorter distance.

Traditions 3 band Enfield kit build

You mention Birchwood Casey bluing kit. I suggest slow rust bluing, as that is how they were done back in the day. Get some browning solution & follow the directions on it. Some also admit they're also for rust bluing. When the brown is uniform and dark, simply boil the barrel or other parts...

    gun works of Oregon

I started there in 1975 or so. With my new Hawken rifle. Came back with my cannon. Ran the cannon shoot once, too. Joe & Suzie were the best! Joe's gone now, but I talked with Suzie a few months ago.

Hate to do it, but here goes.

Wow! What a tiger! Keep the plane flying! I grew up with a "Flying Leatherneck" (US Marine fighter pilot; decorated DFC for flying combat over Korea). I hope this is a fair way to express my interest in whatever you're selling. If not, mea culpa, and advise me how to do so correctly.

    Rust

As already pointed out, you left out acetone. Great degreasing solvent and fully miscible with water, so helps remove any water. I've switched to Zylene/Zylol, though. Not nearly so volatile, but also a good solvent. Both zylene and acetone are pretty innocuous to the body, BTW. (i.e. won't hurt...

    .58 ball size

All you guys are sooo hung up on the size of your balls! Standard US 58 cal US musket bore size was (I believe) .578, land to land. Allowed .575 dia minies to fit in even fouled bores. .562 would be pretty far undersized for me. But I am/was a pretty serious competitive shooter. Come to think of...

    California black powder revolver laws

When I moved to CA in 1973, black powder revolvers were considered same as cartridge guns and had same requirements. I don't know when or how this changed, but am assured this is no longer an issue. Score one bit of gun sanity in CA!

How tough would a 495 ball be to load in my 50cal T/C Hawken

Yep...And the bigger the round ball the more it becomes a sort of double ended bullet upon starting. I think I'll push different size patched balls thru a short section of various caliber barrels to see what comes out. Might be a cool exercize! I suspect this has been done before. Anyone know of...

How tough would a 495 ball be to load in my 50cal T/C Hawken

Tighter is usually better. I loaded some 54 cal balls into a 50 cal and that worked well, too! Use a thicker patch. .005 is way thinner than "normal" (.015 to .020)

    WANTED Lyman 575213 PH Mold

575213 is the original Lyman mould for Springfield (and similar) US rifle muskets. Parker Hale (Enfield) moulds are 577 dia and a very different design.

Ug; idiot rookie mistake, bullet stuck in barrel.

If "tapping" down, do so gently. A hard blow will bulge the bullet making it tighter in the bore. Dribble some Kroil or ATF diluted with zylene and let it sit muzzle up for a few hours. Then resume tapping There is no "cartridge" for Whitworth, and paper patch was not used, though I see no...

Asking again. Best load for a .50 cal?

I always used and won and hunted with 100 gns GOEX 2fg. Shorter range and casual use can work well with as little as 60 gns.

    Ridiculous

When I was a teen, late 50s, I walked or biked past Jackson Arms between Jr high school and home. They knew me well! I couldn't afford any firearms, so made small cannons on my dad's lathe. I would stop in every few months for a 1# can of DuPont BP at $1.25. Paper route earnings allowed such...

    Ruger Old Army

The diameter ball you insert gets resized down substantially going into the cylinder, then again going thru the forcing cone into the bore. A 44 cal bore diameter is .429, just to make things "interestinger". So what caliber is the gun???
