New to Flintlocks, having a minor issue

So I know it has been a really long time since I last posted on this, but I've had a busy year. I was finally able to get out to a range to shoot my flintlock again and I have to say, it was amazing. Prior to going out again I was able to figure out why my shot last December was so long. I was...

New to Flintlocks, having a minor issue

I increased it to 5/64" and only had time for the one shot. I plan on taking it to a range when I get a chance and trying a few more things. I just thought I would see if there was anything obvious I was doing wrong before then. Thanks for the responses.

New to Flintlocks, having a minor issue

I opened up my vent hole a bit but only had time to shoot one round since. Now it appears I am having a different issue I assume is unrelated. I shot a target at about 50 yardsand had over 3 feet of drop. I find it hard to believe my sights are that far off and I am scared of what kind of drop I...

New to Flintlocks, having a minor issue

Thanks for all of the ideas. I think my plan is to start by widening the flash hole to 1/16" and work up from there. If I mess it up I can always get a better vent liner. I also plan on cleaning it more between shots. I found another article on this forum explaining what to do. It seems a little...

New to Flintlocks, having a minor issue

I was mostly referring to the cold preventing any buildup of humidity. I will have to try to vent pick trick though. Actually I all of the ideas are very good. Now to find the combination of ideas that works best for me. I think I will start by trying to increase the size of my vent hole along...

New to Flintlocks, having a minor issue

The last time I went out I refilled the pan four times before I gave up. I had good pan flash each time as my dad confirmed. I had suspected that there was some fouling covering up the flash hole, I'm just guessing it was to the point where I could not clean it without water.

New to Flintlocks, having a minor issue

I've read the same concern on the gun builders side. I just figured I would try it out as is. I guess I never really realized how much of a difference it could make.

New to Flintlocks, having a minor issue

No problem. It is a Lyman GPR in the .54 caliber. I am using .530" roundballs with .015" lubed patches with wonderlube. The powder I have been using is Goex FFFG at about 70 grains. I was trying to do 80 grains for the last few shots but never got one to fire. I'm not sure if this matters, but I...

New to Flintlocks, having a minor issue

I am getting flash in the pan, so I don't think moisture there is a problem. (I live in Nebraska and it has been cold each time I've shot.) I usually have to reprime the pan to try to take another shot since there isn't any powder left. I may have to try to increase the size of the flash hole a...

New to Flintlocks, having a minor issue

I'm relatively new to flintlocks and don't really know anyone local to ask so I figured this was the spot. I finished my kit build a little before Thanksgiving and have had it out a couple of times to shoot. So far I am loving it, but after I get to about 10 shots, I can't seem to get it to...

    Uneven browning

The brown is starting to even out now. I'm assuming it will be fairly even by the time I get it as dark as I want. I haven't had any issues with humidity that I can tell. I put a warm air humidifier in a small room in my basement and it appears to be working well.

    Uneven browning

Thanks Crockett. I've been only doing one coat a day with me working. I've been leaving it on for about 3 hours, then carding with some old denim, then rinsing with hot water and allowing it to sit overnight and the next day until I can get to it again. It does appear to look quite a bit better...

    Uneven browning

It's not really a copper color so much as just spots that are quite a bit darker than the rest. Is this something that will even out as it gets darker?

    Uneven browning

Well I have been working on my first build now for about a week and I feel it is going decently well. I started browning the barrel on Sunday morning using LMF browning solution. It took a couple coats to really start showing up, but now that I have four or five coats on it is starting to look...

First build on the way, had a question.

Right now funds are kind of short so I will stick with the lock that came with it. That isn't something that is too hard to add later if I change my mind is it?

First build on the way, had a question.

Thanks Birddog for the advice. I knew I forgot something when I was ordering from TOW the other day. I will have to get some extra flints ordered sometime soon. Do you recommend the English syle flints?

First build on the way, had a question.

Thanks Zonie. That's what I was looking for. I had planned on taking my time and doing a good job, which shouldn't be hard since I am a little OCD. This was a best case scenario question for the build. Mostly if I happen to be to the stage where the barrel and the lock are fit properly and I am...

First build on the way, had a question.

I recently decided to get into muzzleloading and figured if I am going to do it, why bother with an inline that performs almost as good as my .30-06. I've been reading these forums trying to learn all that I can and decided to go with a GPR flintlock in .54 caliber instead of a percussion due to...
