    Cold weather effects?

Rifle performed well- but it was a bit low and to the right as my last sight in. I had thought the 20-40 mph crosswinds on my last sight in was pushing bullets to the side but apparently I need to adjust it (its hard to find a day the wind is not blowing hard in South Dakota ). At 50 yards it...

    Cold weather effects?

I foolishly sold that one two year's back to get parts to build different muzzleloaders :idunno: I did not like the weight and heft of it when I was stalking. Should not have done that though it was a very accurate rife and stand hunting the size/weight of it (11 lbs.) would not have been...

    Cold weather effects?

Well these deer were strange they let me shoot once and let me reload and shoot again. Only on the second shot did they move off but the eight of them walked at a slow gradual pace. I did check for trails and saw none. :idunno: I'm an experienced hunter (traditional bow, tradional...

    Cold weather effects?

That could be my performance- and I switched to black powder 2 years ago. I agree a quick shot would help. I'll see if I can get out to the other farms I can shoot at to check so I don't disturb game at this one I am hunting at. We really don't have much for ranges out here just friends...

    Cold weather effects?

That could be it, wearing three layers vs a T-shirt would have a difference... Also most of my practice was not on a bench and this was like being on a bench... That should have helped though. The closest range is a 100 miles away, so going there is not much of an option, usually I shoot not...

    Cold weather effects?

The deer just walked off, no blood trails and my ears are pretty well trained for the distinctive sound of a deer being hit. (The thwack). Also I am in the wide open prairie with fresh snow and no blood trail. The other factor was I was in an elevated blind, usually I hunt more traditionally...

    Cold weather effects?

I tried searching the forum with no luck (but the search engine is tough). I wanted to ask if cold weather affected the point of impact of black powder? The last couple days I have taken three shots at deer- all within 40-80 yards (percussion investarms .50 cal "hawken"). All 3 times deer...

    therifleshoppe?

Can't remember honestly, downloaded and looked at about all of them as I could when doing research last year. One of my projects is to build a matchlock petronel... just down on my list as I have a nice piece of special order wood (from Dunlap) for it and afraid of "messing it up" , so am...

    therifleshoppe?

I ordered once from them, had the parts a week later (it was shipped out two days after order). Parts were in stock... But just saying my experience was positive :idunno:

    build and thanks

I would like to thank everyone on this forum that offers advice but especially Tinker2 who has taken me under wing and encouraged me to learn many new skills. Lately he has been nice enough to allow me to use his lathe and show me how to use it. I was able to finish a handgonne and some 16th...

    matchlock sight materials

Well maybe no one knows so I made one of each on Tinker2's lathe. I'm sure I or someeone else can make use of one of these tube lights. Big thanks to tinker2 for tutoring me on these projects!

    Matchlock barrel

They did exist, especially on target matchlocks but in period they were less common. The matchlock I am building is a smoothie but hey I'd say do it and have fun.

    matchlock sight materials

So asking a few folks here, when it comes to matchlock or other early peep sights ( or match holders as some claim). I want to say all the ones I have seen were steel.... Anybody find any of brass or other materials in these types of sights?

    Spanish Rifle Build

Actually the thing I like about the Spanish is that the "working gun" was their philosphy  They tended not to have all the decorative guns like the French, English and Germans. They found beauty in a fine functioning gun over lots of carving, inlays, etc. (with some exceptions...

    Spanish Rifle Build

In History of Spanish firearms by James Lavin (page 192). "Walnut while principally employed for furniture, was also used for stocks from the 16th century on.... Espinar lists cherry, perhaps the most popular wood for better quality arms, as " it is easy to work, does not warp [and] takes a...

    forsyth barrel

Jason at Rice barrels makes them and recommends high powder charges. I have one for a build. Forsythe rifling is different than most. They do have the advantage of use in shot. Here is a link explaining the concept: Link

    matchlock wood finishes

I can go either way on tung or boiled linseed. I don't mind the thought of taking months finishing a stock right :-) Oh here is what I am thinking of building for my matchlock:

    matchlock wood finishes

Thanks everyone for the input- I will do that with the aqua fortis and linseed oil. I now don't feel so bad about starting a carve on curly maple knowing I can get it looking reasonably period looking (and save the expensive cherry for the escopeta miquelet project down the line)!

    matchlock wood finishes

Just checking to see what sort of wood finishes we might expect to have on a 16th century Spanish matchlock? I'm thinking of making a matchlock for my first full carve. Rather than possibly mess up the nice $160 cherry fullstock I was thinking of starting on the $20 piece of curly maple...

    rely on hunting

Last time I took a deer to be processed (about 7 years ago) I got a bill for $250... Granted it wasprobably close to a 300 lb Muley but still at that point I decided to do my own. One year I was licensed and took 10 deer. Gave a lot away to friends and needy families... But that got to be a lot...
