    Next rifle--.32,36,40???

My experience is just the opposite. I have a 36 that I like but when I got my 40 the 36 started collecting dust. My 36 is slim and trim but i like the way the 40 balances much better. That isn't due to caliber but to the style in which both rifles are made. I like the 40 caliber for an all...

Early Ketland, Colonial Virginia or Round-faced English lock?

As already stated they are all good locks and pretty much the same but the round faced English although my favorite, does have that border around it that looks really good but can be time consuming to polish.

    What do I have?

I have one of Jacks rifles in a souther style 36 cal and have had it many years. I really like mine and it has proven to be a fine rifle. The name looks like this on mine and I'm betting yours is similar also.

    best metal for knife blades

A friend I work with is a knife maker and most of the knives he makes are made from D2. I have several of his knives and have been very impressed. He said it is a high carbon steel with a high chromium content so it is less likely to rust but it is not really a stainless. He also uses 1095 steel...

    Altoid tins

I Also use altoid tins but one of my favorite tins are the kewi shoe polish tins. It is what I carry my fire kit in. I punched a small hole in the lid for a vent and when the time is right I just stick a small sharpened limb in it to block off the oxygen when making Char cloth.

Range Test: .45Cal Double PRB deer load

Yes I do know rib bones were hit but that is all I remember. It was a few years ago and don't recall which ball hit what.

Range Test: .45Cal Double PRB deer load

My experience with double ball is limited but I have killed one deer with it and my experience with it was one pass through and one moderately deformed ball on off side under the skin. I don't know how much the velocity or energy was changed with the load but one thing to consider was the ball...

Range Test: .45Cal Double PRB deer load

Your 50 yard groups are better than mine  I was surprised when I experimented with my 40 at just how well I grouped. Do you know how much your velocity changed ?

    40 caliber good?

He would have been dead either way, but there was definitely more damage, two holes as opposed to one. I also might note I loaded with a metal range rod , not my wooden ramrod. With my range rod I can actually feel when I get to the powder charge. It is also one reason I dropped the load as I...

    40 caliber good?

Not really double loaded so to say. It was a single powder charge of 65 gr 3f and two patched round balls over the top. I used it to take a deer a few years ago and it proved very effective. The range of the shot was somewhere in the 40 yard range. The pictures of the targets were taken while I...

    40 caliber good?

Found those targets I was looking for earlier. The first is a 40 cal double ball load at 50 yards. The second pic is the same gun, same day and powder charge. What I found most interesting was that impact between the loads did not change.

    40 caliber good?

I too also experimented with double ball load in my 40 with similar results. 25 yards one oval hole point of aim. 50 yards in all cases both balls were touching in a sideways figure 8 pattern. With 60 gr of 3 f it was a very accurate load. The first year there was no specification of number of...

    caliber selection and meat damage

I have killed deer with several calibers , most a 50 cal and round ball. I found little tissue damage but lots of blood. I have also killed a couple with a 54 with the same results , plenty of blood and supprisingly little loss of meat. That being said , the most tissue damage I have received...
