    Magnifying visor?

A friend of mine had this posted in his shop... "Quality is like buying oats, if you are looking for good clean full oats you gotta pay the price....If you are willing to settle for oats that have already been thru the horse, they come cheaper."

    breech plugs

Thanks, but are you saying that this is an unsafe project that should not be done or that due to potential liabilities most shops would not do it?

    breech plugs

I have a 12 gauge shot gun barrel that I think will make a good turkey smoothbore. I've cut off the chamber end and it looks like a 7/8x14 Brown Bess breech plug will work. Looking now for a machine shop to drill and tap. I want to be sure that the projectile exits the muzzle end. Does anyone...

    Making wooden ramrods

I just sawed some .5x.5 in. blanks from the outer edge of an Ash plank. The outer edge will show "close" growth rings, quarter sawn logs will produce the "rings" at or close to straight across the boards. Plain or flat sawing will produce this at or close to the center of the log. This grain...

    58 cal. slow twist barrel

"I do run on and on." And THANKS for that, the wealth of knowledge that you and some others bring to this board cannot be obtained elsewhere.

    Lock hammer contact with cap

I think that LJA is probably on the mark with the firing issue. If (when) this happens again remove the nipple, work some powder into the drum, replace the nipple and fire. If this sets off the charge your issue is most probably in the breech as he describes. A different nipple may give you more...

    First Horn (flat)

Nice looking horn! I have braided both 3 and 4 strands of jute twine for horn straps. I do try to find a good quality twine as some of the cheap stuff has "thin spots". I also wax the strands to lay down the fibers a bit before braiding.

Steaming Dents and Compression Marks Out

Very common practice in furniture building or refinishing. I have had good luck making sure there is no finish left in the low spot and then just a drop of water in the dent and then heat. This will often raise the offending spot and not the area around it as well. A damp press cloth to prevent...

    Waterproof fabric

I believe that "water resistant" is as good as you are going to get with either fabric or leather and still have the knee flexible. My experience has been infiltration from the ends to be more of an issue than thru the knee.

    rust prevention products

I believe that you are correct with the 3 in 1 oil. I was a bit surprised to see "SAE 20 Motor Oil" printed on the front of my newest can. Maybe I will buy it by the quart. :metoo:

    skill,s lost

I must agree with Clyde (sometimes I do not). Who worked to provide kids and grandkids with the things that we never had...Christmas for some in our age group meant something warm to wear and a little something to play with, a pair of "hand me down" wool pants with a hole in one pocket. Help...

    Rebuild Project

This group provides EXPERT advise, this way you will wind up with the antique and one to shoot/hunt with. The Leman Trade Rifle is a good choice, just finishing one, I like the way it shoulders and holds. Double check the lock bolt location before drilling to make sure the tumbler clears at full...

    Knowing what you know now?

Wish I could have got into this at your age, but with 2 kids a house to build and 2 jobs there just was not time(or money). This reminded me of one of my Dad's sayings, "I don't know as I would do much different...but I'd do a hell of a lot more of it".
