    Walker vs. Dragoon

The dragoons have the loading lever retainer that some walkers had issue with falling and binding the cylinder. The dragoons are lighter as you say so the one hand shooting is more comfortable. I do like the walker because nothing is better for the WOW feeling when shooting revolvers.

Show us your flintlock squirrel rifles!

Well, I like the old girl I guess. I took it out last week for a little target practice. Shot fine and enjoyed the trip as always.

    squirrel gun

Ah yes, breathing, I don't think most people are even taught this anymore. I think most want to just pull that trigger. It's good to have friends to catch/suggest things. Great folks are out there----use them.

    Misfire issue

You beat me to it. Taking a look if the powder is coming up into the drum is a good diagnosis tool.

    Home defense

My family lore goes back into the 1840s or so and I have only heard about the "old scatter gun" when it came to what guns were owned. Wish I had it/them. :(

    Douglass .32 load/accuracy question!

I have a 32 but is a custom gun. It is a 1/66 twist and I use 20 grains of 3f and have excellent results out to 50 yards, If I had better eyes it might be better. 20 grains is plenty to take tree rats--even the fat city ones if need be.

    Small Load Powder Measure

I use the one in the link. It works well loading the cylinder in the frame on my 1849s and 58 Remmy if I am too lazy to take it out. I used to use the one with the funnel before I bought fixed measures for everything. http://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?ProductID=2&do=detail&Cat2Option=yes

    Deer Story

Totally agree with perfect practice makes perfect. I do see the flash on the right side of my vision but it does not bother me. It is over before I know the difference. My deal is the follow through at times but I am always getting better know I will never be perfect.

    How do you shoot, typicaly?

If shooting at the range I typically spread some of my junk out at the table but walk 8-10 feet to the right and shoot from there--far away from the junk pile. If out and about, well the bag (you knew that already)

    new to me used walker

Welcome to the forum, Congrats on the Walker and the goodies. I hope the powder is NOT 4f, if it is you don't need to use it in the Walker and I hope it was not used in it before. 3F is what you want to use for that hogleg. As for the screw, you may need to call Dixie or some one else that has...

    More Reliability!

Not bad shooting, I agree with the others--tap the rear sight a little and that group will be right in the 10 ring. I did a test like that with my 45 cal and it went into the twenties before I had a Fail to fire. I wiped the frizzen and off it went for another twenty or so. I tried it with my...

Rifle Ordered -now what gear/supplies do I need to shoot?

I agree with the other folks, it is fun to make your own tools. The only thing I can add to the items needed list might be a gun case/sock/sleeve--something to protect your new honey back and forth to the stand, range, show and tell spot.

    Black powder storage

You may be right but I don't think the cans are vented. My garage will be the last place anyone will want to be if the place is on fire, I keep 3-4 pounds of BP at a time, 3-4 cans of smokeless, 8-10 K of primers, and XXXXXXX rounds of center fire loaded ammo, and countless cans of aerosols . I...

    CVA Mountain Rifle

My dad built a 58 capper somewhere around 78-79. He shot it a dozen times and hung it under a deer mount where it resides today. I shot it a little and remember a tight spot about half way down the barrel. I tried to "work" it out with valve grinding compound, flitz, etc-- never seemed to get...

    Walker loads and projectiles

I have one of those molds in 31 for my 1848 baby dragoon. Any tips on that mold, I was going to attempt to cast a few balls with mine in the next few weeks. I see you smoked the mold, any advise would be great.

    Best pan charger/short starter?

I have a 45 cal too that I use a .440 ball with .015-.017 ticking patch. It seems tight enough. Just wondering if you are having an issue with the .445 ball and patch; trying to get the ball down the barrel might be/will contribute to a ball deforming. Have you tried a .440 ball? What is the...

    Black powder storage

I use a couple of army ammo cans. Watertight, sealable, humidity control, stackable, etc. A 50 caliber can will hold 7 one pounders, a 800 round 5.56 can will hold 11-12 one pounders, a 40 mm grenade can will hold 20-22 one pounders. Just seek a Army surplus store in your area, they shold have...

    Best pan charger/short starter?

Welcome to the forum. If you don't mind me asking, what are the details on you rifle. Brand, caliber, patch thickness, powder you are using, etc. As for a pan charger, many of use use a horn to carry only one powder with us. I started using a 3 grain push charger but it needed maintenance...

Black powder people a few questions RE: flintlocks

Yea, I stuff 120 of 2f in my 58 cal, ouch might be the word of the day with 3f in a 50. Depends on the quality of rifle I guess.

    Coneing a Barrel ???

I agree, if you want to cut patches at the muzzle the cone will drive you crazy. As far as the pre-cut patches, watch out for the diameter. My 32 cal is coned and the diameter of the precuts is about the size of the outer diameter of the barrel. It is a pain in the royal butt to center the ball...
