    .58 ball or mini?

I killed a lot of deer with a 1861 springfield and minnie balls before I switched to flintlocks only for hunting. I have since killed lots of deer with .50 cal round balls and even a .40 cal round ball. Figure it as a 100-125 yard gun and round balls will harvest anything in north america. They...

    Any 40cal shooters? Advice?

Welcome to the .40 cal flintlock. They are beautiful killers. I shoot targets and small game with 30 grains of 3f and a .395 ball. This load will pick the head clean off of squirrels. I shoot 60 grains for deer. I killed a 4 pointer this October at 65 yards with this load. He ran 25-30 yards...

    Spiked Tomahawk

Beautiful workmanship and a nice piece of wood. Looks kinda dangerous to carry though. Would be a bad day if you slipped and fell on it.

How do you ready your gun for the first shot, when hunting?

I do the same thing minus the pipe cleaner. I run 3-4 patches to get the oil out of the barrel before I load. I also wipe the pan and flint clean as well. While hunting I clear the pan, pick and prime about every hour.

    First Deer!

I've killed deer with centerfire rifles, percussion rifles, recurve bows, and flintlocks. Nothing matches the thrill of taking game with your flintlock. You have been bitten by the bug. There is no cure.

    Fiber Wads

I use the 1/2 fiber wads in my fowler. I soak them in olive oil and press them with a paper towel. When I load I break it into thirds and push them into the muzzle over a card. They seem to fly apart when they leave the barrel and not fly through the shot.

    Doe Down

I had a similar experience several years ago. I got to my tree and loaded my 1861 springfield. I used the military load in the gun. 60 grains of powder and a home cast minieball. As soon as I climbed up into the tree and leaned back, a big 8 pointer walked out. That huge lead slug put him on the...

    grouping shots

These are some things I have learned over time with my flintlocks that speed up ignition. 1) Always pick the vent after loading. Clearing the vent will prevent the fuze effect of powder in the vent and allow the flash to enter the main charge faster. 2) Dont let the prime cover the vent. This...

    Seasoning a Flinter?

I agree with most of the posts here. Modern steel barrels cannot be seasoned like cast iron cookware. Keep your gun clean and shoot alot. Over time this will polish off all the rough areas and burs in the barrel and she should become a real shooter. On my rifles I like to take some 0000 steel...

    First shoot patch diagnosis

I get good accuracy in my .50 cal flinter shooting 65 grains of 3f goex and a cotton drill cloth patch. I buy the cloth by the yard from Wal-Mart. That load is a killer on SC white tails. I like to use an over powder wad as well to seal the gas behind the patch. I found that one square from a...

    Couple more flintlock questions

Sorry, I am laughing my @$$ off at that story! That is the funniest flintlock mishap story I've ever heard. I would have loved to have seen your faces. Anyway, I get 60-80 shots from a flint before I toss it. I will dress the edge after 15-20. A friend of mine took a nail and turned a small...

    Today I made fire

I'm still trying to learn the bow drill. Flint and steel came easy to me with char cloth, and on a sunny day I can make fire with my burning lens. I tried a bow drill but couldn't do it. I exhausted my supply of profanity learned in 20 years of naval service. I'll get it though.

    First flintlock wild boar

Great hunt and story. We have hogs here to in the swamps but I have never hunted for them. May have to rethink that after some cool weather knocks down the mosquito population some. They will carry you off now.

    Cleaning In the Hunting Camp?

I always clean with hot water and run several patches down the bore until clean and dry. I follow this with a patch soaked in Break Free CLP. Maybe not "PC" but I want the bore protected. I use a patch before the hunt to swab the oil out then load. Works for me anyway. I inspect the bores of...

    100% or so....underlyig theme?

practice and learn with your flinter. Find out what works the best for your gun. No it will not be 100%. Nothing is. Sooner or later you will pull back the hammer of that cap gun on a deer and hear a pop with no boom. It will happen. When you learn the little secrets of your flint rifle, pay...

    Gettin close!

I've been in the woods three times this week and have seen deer twice now. When everything falls into place I am going to punch one with the new .40. Yall must not have much crime in your town. If I were to write a ticket for less than 15 over the limit I would get some grief over it.

    %#$&#@$ Flintlock.....oh wait...

I got rid of my .243 and cap lock rifle years ago and hunt everything only with flintlocks. I have a .50 Lancaster for deer, a .40 Lancaster for small game (worked up a load of 60 grains for deer) and a 20 bore fowler. When you put meat on the table with a flintlock, hunting with anything else...

    flint vs. percussion

With my rifles, I can get up to 80-90 shots from a good flint. My 20 bore fowler will crush them alot faster though. Also with aging eyes and hands that stiffen up in cold damp weather I dont want to fool with those little caps.

    Newbie Question

The easiest way to clean a flintlock is to remove the lock and plug the vent with a toothpick. Then just pour some hot water down the barrel and dump it out 2-3 times. Run some patches down the barrel to dry it then an oil patch. Good as new. This can usually be done with one beer!

.44 round ball vs short conical

I had a 51 Navy revolver in .44. I think it was made by Pieta (spelling). Anyway, it shot round balls pretty well so I decided to try conicals. I bought some of the buffalo ballets to try but could not rotate them under the loading arm of the gun to ram them into the cylinder.
