    Rookie Mistake

Been there a couple of times. Range rod with ball puller attached, screw firmly into the ball, attach big pair of channel locks up the rod a ways. Sharp blow with a big rubber hammer on the pliers will get it started out. Continue tapping on the pliers until it clears the barrel. I'm...

    My budy, the cheapskate

Discharge every time, you see there is this stump near where I park about 200 yards out that I like to shoot at... I hate to go to the woods and not shoot at something, that old stump has a few holes in it.

    TC Hawkin 25th Anniversary Caplock

Saw one a few days ago in a local gun shop. No box or papers, $499.00 That in a market that doesn't assign high value to traditional black powder guns. Sharp looking gun.

    My shoot results

I have seen it happen, associated with a dip and rise between you and the target, wind from your six. Much more pronounced at long range, wind coming 90 degrees to the feature, only way to go is up...projectile gains some lift. Learned that the hard way in competition, (highpower)...

    Lessons learned...

Posted about this rifle about a month ago, thought it might be good to post what I have learned up to now. Rifle is Investarms Hawken .50, bought in yard sale for little money. Barrel is pitted and rifling is very shallow. Looked up manufacture date and it seems it was manufactured in 1976...

Back from the range, think I finally have all the little problems worked out. Changed the nipple and with a little help from an old timer who was there shooting two of the nicest flintlocks I have ever seen. He had me try some 3F at 60 grains and it is firing every time and far more accurate...

Got my parts from TOW, wow...3 days delivery. Off to the range in the morning, report to follow, going to apply some of the great suggestions from the posts here.

Wow...When I get the new nipples, think I will reduce the charge to 60 and see how it shoots. :hmm: Still looking for thicker patches also. I will get all this worked out before deer season... :idunno:

Sounds right, supplies around here are hard to find so I will probably make my own. How about pillow ticking, are they what I am looking for? Should I cut them in oversize squares and trim them at the muzzle? I haven't seen much in my reading on the subject.

I remembered the patch reference from a prior post. Found the fired patches about 20 feet in front of me, note a 10+ wind from 12 o'clock. The cleaning patches with yellow tint were the last, applied bore butter and one more to clear the excess. The upper left fired patch is, I believe...

Yes, sealed, I have used it. I apparently guessed the location of the front sight pretty well, still going to same point of impact. Having a problem with the caps not going off the first time. Cleaned the nipple off thinking that the cap was not seating all the way and had better luck after...

Going to make another run to the range today, got the front sight tightened, going out to 50 yds. Reducing the charge to 50gr. and see how it shoots as was suggested. Also found 5 tins of these in a box of MZ loader tools and other I bought along with a couple of powder horns, flasks, and...

Sounds like good advise, after all half the fun is experimentation. I am new to the black powder thing but have many years of firearms experience in competition and other, always learning.

Back from the range, results are a lot better than I thought. It looks like it shoots better with a fouled bore. On the second target two went almost in the same hole. Range was 25 yards, recoil very light.   Cleaning it, used boiling water to get out the...

I'm going to shoot it today, if it has acceptable accuracy I will keep it. The only use will be hunting primarily during our one week muzzleloader season, then back to my '06 probably. Where I hunt got about 50 yard max shot so sterling accuracy is not a major issue. I kinda hate to put a $200...

Finally got down to bare metal using Butch's Bore Shine. That stuff will clear it out in a hurry, your sinus's too. Wet it down good and let it go about 30 minutes, 30 strokes of the brush, and about 15 patches and done. There was a ton of rust under the leading, small pits from end to end, a...

I found an old Rig Lead-Wipe in my kit, cut it into patch size. It is taking the lead out quick, can see the rifling now. I'm encouraged when I get it cleaned up will hit the range and post the results. Got to buy some components first. Thanks for the advise, great site... Ron

Came on this rifle in the worlds longest yard sale in Tennessee. Looks great on the outside, barrel is rough. Pointed that out to the owner and talked him down to $90. It came with a box of old conical lead bullets and some other accessories. I have been working on the barrel for an hour or...
