any 4 bore shooters out there?

I read about Sir Samuel Baker years ago,and built an "elephant gun",sort of... The barrel was 1" bore smooth,30" long, with an old Enfield lock. The piece weighed 14 lbs. and I put a modern recoil pad on it. I didn't find a mold for it,but bought a dozen 15/16" ball bearings for about a dollar...

    1862 58 calibre

Jess, the rifle-musket marked 1862 MIGHT be a Model 1861,made by Springfield armory and other contractors.Values vary by maker and condition, but in good condition it would start at $800.It should have a 40" barrel. The musket marked 1846 Harpers Ferry MIGHT be a Model 1842 U.S. percussion musket...

    underhammer at TOTW

36, that rifle is a beauty! I have a new underhammer (on a Deer Ck.action)that I'm happy with, otherwise I'd be begging you to build me a similar one. From the photos I'm guessing the receiver has an integral breech, meaning no separate breech plug like mine has.I'm thinking an integral breech...

    underhammer at TOTW

Fellow underhammer fans,Track of the Wolf has a very fine underhammer rifle for sale under percussion rifles, page 3 on their website.Someone already has dibs on it.You ought to take a look! There is no maker's mark on it.Does anyone know who made this rifle?

    peep sight on my underhammer

After reading the posts by gmww,fw,and others on this forum about underhammer rifles,I bought one.The underhammer is the right choice for this left-handed shooter.I got mine from Ron Gueldner of Milwaukie,Or.It is a .54 cal. for patched round ball.Excellent workmanship, trigger, and accuracy.I...

    Uberti vs. Pietta

Jim Bob,Buffalo arms is selling the Cimarron brand. They are Ubertis imported in the white and finished in the States.I assume the Cimarron has a better finish. You mentioned recently that you would carry it in case of bears, cougar,or wolves deciding to have you for dinner.I looked at Lyman's...

LOOK what I Dug up FOUND! a gun

I looked through my gun books, and it doesn't appear to be from any military musket or rifle. It is similar to many civilian rifle locks that I saw photos of.From the looks of your lock,I'd say it was never converted from flintlock as some were.Your lock would date from the 1830's,when percussion...

    remove rust from melting pot?

Gee,I assumed they were supposed to rust.Rust is an oxide layer like the browning on a gun.I just scrape the bottom and sides with a spoon with a wood handle, once each casting session, while fluxing the alloy or lead. Then remove the dross and rust with the spoon.Doing this after fluxing helps...

    who builds heavy bench guns?

The Gun Works has lots of used slug guns for sale, mostly by top makers of the 1960's-1970's. Link

    weird thinga ahappenin

Well, yeah! Using the top of your rear sight will make a big difference.I think you'll find it best to sight in at 50 yards with the lower part of your rear sight, and also at 100 yards with the same sighting. The top of your rear sight might be good for a shot at a bucket at 200 yards!I think...

    weird thinga ahappenin

Jax,I don't know what kind of target you are using,so I'll use mine as an example of what happens when I sight in.I like a round black bullseye of about 2 1/2"-3" diameter at 50 yards, and a 5"-6" bull at 100 yards. They're big enough to see,and about the same width as my front sight at their...

    Securely displaying a rifle

I agree with Bountyhunter. My gun safe has already saved my guns(and camera,binos,etc.)once.The burgler got my S&W revolver and many other items, but the good stuff was safe in the safe.I kept the S&W out of the safe well hidden because of an attempted forced entry while I was home a couple of...

    Misfire question

I've never used musket caps, but I wonder if maybe the brush caught the ears of your cap and pulled it up a bit,got it crooked on the nipple. My rifle has misfired when I failed to seat a no.11 cap all the way onto the nipple. When I push hard to seat the cap it goes on another 1/32" or so.At least...

    TC Renegade Shooting Eratic

Another thing you might check out.On my Renegade the barrel channel is a bit oversize which allowed the barrel to wiggle left and right. So I cut 3/8" by 1" strips of masking tape and stuck them into the angled flats of the barrel channel just forward of the barrel wedge pin.It took 5-6 strips on...

Best place to order a T/C Renegade?

I bought mine from Fox Ridge Outfitters. That's TC's custom shop,I think. You can choose your caliber and rifling type for bullets or balls.

Bill, you may have to postpone that new rifle purchase. You're gonna have to take them to the "doggie orthodontist".They need braces! That's gonna cost you! :rotf:

    Dragging deer

Catamount,I've been using Cabela's Super Mag Hauler for several years now,and wouldn't hunt without it.It's just about as easy to pull a deer on that cart as walking without it.I just leave it in the back of my truck until I need it.It's locked under the canopy. If you don't have a canopy,then...

    What is it??

I looked in Flayderman's Guide to Firearms,7th edition, and on page 247,at the bottom there is a shotgun that looks like yours. It is a Whitney percussion shotgun, made 1866-1869.Says here that surplus .58 caliber rifle barrels were reamed to about .60 caliber(20 gauge),and used on this model.I'd...

How many leave sidelock half cocked

About the spring wearing out.I've come across many guns that had been left cocked(but unloaded)for many years and still would fire reliably when put to use.Coil springs and flat springs too.The guns I refer to were modern to maybe 70 years old.I don't know how an antique would do.
