I've always found the Whitneys to be fascinating. I've been planning on getting one, but something else always seems to get in the way.

    New Frizzen needed?

The earlier TC locks were harder on flints than the later ones. They changed the shape of the hammer and frizzen a bit to improve the geometry. You can do an image search and see which yours is. If it's the early, you may be able to get some newer parts to upgrade.

    1842 Springfield 69cal question

Not a model 1842, it is a model 1840 made in 1842. They were originally flintlock, this one as most were, was converted to percussion. This one was done with the Belgian, cone in barrel conversion, this was the most common US conversion and officially done by US armorers.

need help with 58 minie bullet mold

You can get a few sizes of pin gauges from Amazon, you don't really need a whole set. To further muddy the waters, you can't count on a mold dropping the exact size ball that it is supposed to. The best way is to start with a bullet minutely larger and size them with a push through sizer so...

    Musket loading

It really depends on what kind of musket you are talking about, this is the percussion rifle section so you may mean Civil War era rifle muskets? If that is the case then no, the paper was discarded and the minie ball was loaded bare.

From Spiller and Burr to Whitney.

Interesting, but the Whitney frame shape is quite different from the Spiller and Burr, much more open in front of the cylinder.

    Traditions Question Help

The Traditions is actually made by Armisport, and is a decent repro. Probably one of the most authentic repros available. I would make the decision based on what unit you will be reenacting, check to see what they were armed with.

Can you guys school me on grades of Hawkens? Quality, value, etc.

I've had most of the the production brand guns over the last 50 years and if I wanted a halfstock plains type rifle I would get an Investarm rifle, no question about it. I still have two of the Investarm Hawken rifles and an Investarm made Lyman Trade rifle. All are fantastic shooters, best of...
