    new bag

I like it. I would add a nice braided strap and possibly add a patch knife sheath/slit. Dave

Whats so great about real black powder?

I am fairly new to muzzleloaders and I use both Pyrodex RS as well as 3F and 2F black powder. My observations: The Pyrodex is more expensive, I pay $18.95 a lb. but you get more shots per lb. I mail order BP and even after the hazmat fee, it's cheaper if you order 4 lb. or more. The higher...

    CVA & GPR day!

Thanks for the replies! I think I'll go ahead and buy a Spitfire nipple for the CVA. The local stores don't seem to stock magum pimers, only regular #11s. I will also use BP or at least a BP starter charge with the Pyrodex in either the CVA or GPR. Dave

    CVA & GPR day!

I spent the afternoon shooting my CVA St. Louis Hawkin style gun that I built and my Lyman GPR - purchased assembled. Pyrodex worked fine in the GPR, but there was a noticable delay with the CVA. Both guns worked great with 2F BP or a 10gr BP base and then a Pyrodex load. Would a better nipple...

    Patch Cutter

I bought a 1 3/8 Arch Punch for somewhere around $20 or so. I had to sharpen it a bit to cut fabric better. It works well, but square patches are easier. Now I use a big paper cutter or scissors. Dave

    Ball molds?

Not a bad idea! Actually, I use a soft faced hammer and push the sprue plate open with the top of the hammer the instant the sprue puddle solidifies. After another second or so, I'll open the mold and if the ball is a bit reluctant to pop out on it's own, I'll gently whack the hinge a bit with...

    Ball molds?

I have a single cavity Lee .490 mold and it works great. I have cast about 15 lbs of round balls with no problems so far. :shocked2: I would go for the 2 up if I was going to do it again. A Lyman dipper and a mallet for the sprue plate is a good idea. Dave

    "Kick" powder?

How about telling a fellow Idahoan where to find it? Dave

    One cavity mold

Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out. Dave

    Swaged or Run Balls?

I decided to measure some of my cast balls and some Hornady swaged balls and see how they compared. Both were .490 lead balls. Here is what I found: 15 each were weighed and the diameter measured -----------------swaged----------cast avg. weight: 178.2 gr -----175.9 gr min. weight: 177.2 gr...

    journey cakes

"When times were hard, we got the chicory blend, stout stuff it was too." I like Chicory in coffee. I had a friend buy me a lb of Cafe Du Monde coffee with Chicory when they visited New Orleans a month or so ago. Dark and strong. Good stuff. Dave

How Do You Fill Your Powder Measure?

I slightly overfill my powder measure, even it with the funnel and load. I try to avoid tapping while filling to get about the same mesure each time. Dave

    Kasenit

"(there is NO WAY you could ever do this with a propane torch), heat the part to bright orange (I NEVER see steel glow "cherry red"...)" Yes there is a way. A propane torch works just fine on small pieces of steel - I've one it many times. A propane torch runs about 1,300 C and the Curie...

    Kasenit

Glad it worked. Kasenit can make the surface as hard as glass. Dave

    journey cakes

Yeah, I know that journey cakes were originally corn meal, salt and water. They probably lasted darn near forever, similar to hard tack. Talk about bland! I just prefer mine fried in a bit of bacon grease and dunked in honey, cane syrup, molasses or honey. Don't forget the pot of coffee. Gotta...

    Swaged or Run Balls?

"I agree completely. We are talking about muzzleloaders here. Logic would lead one to think it was important in them too, but it isn't. They can shoot some pretty crappy projectiles and a wide range of charges with outstanding results. There is no measurable difference in the way culls shoot...

    Black Powder

I'm powder poor, 2 lbs of BP and a lb of fauxdex. Dave

Minus the coffee? I can't function without it. Dave

    Swaged or Run Balls?

I imagine a person can get reasonable hunting/plinking accuracy with a less than optimal quality ball. My experience with target shooting centerfire rifles and pistols leads me to believe that bullet quality has a measurable and sometimes, considerable, effect on accuracy. Dave
