Thoughts?

Don't know your rifle, but I have to ask if it has a brass blade for the front sight.

On bright sunny days I can get two groups more or less like you describe due to glare on that sight.

All fixed when I blackened the sight.

I enjoy brass sights in low light, but as the sun comes up I always blacken them.

I had the same thing happen yesterday. I was shooting a .54 smoothie at 50 yards off the bench. Two shots touching, but high. Two shots an inch apart but low.

I'm going to blacken my front sight and try again.

Front sight shaders are NMLRA legal. Still an "open" sight.

Dang brush is always knocking them off.

Cataract surgery fixed that problem for me. Painless and boy what a difference.

Yep, something like this can get knocked off. But a globe is more sturdy and still legal. Especially 100 miles north of the Arctic circle. :shocked2:

I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple years ago, all the guns I shot make two distinct groups about 1" apart.
Long story short, my retina was detaching. Kinda flopping around if you will.
