Man oh man, do I miss fishing those strip mine lakes there. Never a bad fishing day on them. I wouldn't mind hunting some of those pigs you guys have down there in Florida. Knowing those pythons were there might be a little unsettling. If one slithered in front of me there would be 2 movements, a physical movement and a bowel movement to quote Rodney Carrington. 🤣
Snakebit, I don't want to derail this squirrels hunting thread, but Hogs are fun to hunt, good eating if sows or not too big of boars. Never hunted the Glades where them damn pythons are, however wife and I have done some serious fishing and trekking in the Glades. Never seen any Pythons, but the Cottonmouths are very thick. My Brother always taught me to pay attention of surroundings no matter where I was, but down here I learned not to space off and watch ever step.
If we were sitting around a kitchen table or a campfire I could tell stories of fishing and getting frogs out of them there strip mines for hours.. I love Florida, miss alot of outdoor activities in Illinois...
One day I hope to make it back up there and relive some of my childhood hunting and fishing...
Right now planning to get out in the woods this weekend and get me some Squirrels....

I used to live in the Highlands of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, the middle of the mitten.
There we had four types of squirrels. The biggest were the Fox Squirrels, then down in
size were the Grays followed by the Blacks which are morphed from Grays. The smallest
ones were Reds. They were nasty little buggers. It is said to control the population of the
other three types, a Red will gnaw off the testicles of its enemy.

I chuckle when some of my PA buddies say that reds are small. We shoot them like this back home in the bottoms of Illinois. I know I should try and blur the rifle out, my boys first squirrel, with a rifle that belonged to his great grandfather.
That’s just a red grey squirrel the red we grt
Those here in nc and thr
Red squirrels we get a lot of people call boomers are about the size of a chipmunk or a big flying squirrel and we don’t get any foe squirrels that I know of till you get in Florida maybe southern Georgia

Yessir. The exuberance of youth! Enjoy the woods buddy! Shoot straight.

I was stationed in England, my landlord said I could hunt grays, but I had to leave the reds alone. But I was for Ed to shoot them with a pellet gun. I always had fried squirrel.

Just found this thread and I'm an avid squirrel hunter, with this year being my first with my Kibler SMR .32. Season opens up here Sept 15. I was out at first light and promptly missed a black squirrel at about 20 yards, then ended up getting my cleaning jag stuck in the barrel and called it a day. I took it out a few more times and did shoot one off the side of a tree but it got in a hole before I could get to it. Other than that the canopy was just too thick. My last couple hunts before bow season opened up on Oct 1st I took the shotgun because I actually needed a few for a recipe I wanted to try. Throughout bow season and then gun season I seen a ton limb shakers (the areas I hunt have Grey, Black, Fox and Red) and had a plan to get after them once gun season ended Jan 1st. I've been out a couple times and had success hunting behind my buddies blackmouth curr but that was with a rimfire .22 and .17 hmr. My buddy and I have a plan to get into a couple squirrel tournaments in the next few weeks. Not sure if I will take the Kibler as we cover 10+ miles a day and it's a pain to lug that thing compared to my .17. I do go out and sit and may take the Kibler but this time of year there is just no cover and my shots are often 60 yds or more. Season goes until March 31st so I've got plenty of time to try and get my first one with the .32 but more and more I've been thinking about getting a trade gun as the best squirrel movement here is when there's still a thick canopy on the trees and they're up there cutting.

As much as I like to hunt, and eat them, I feed them at home. Better than TV most of the time.

That's half the fun of using a 32 undertow, trying to head shoot them lil fellers with that tiny RB. I agree though, I will use my New Englander 12 gauge when I need a few for the freezer. Kinda jealous of your Kibler. Still inching my way towards a Flintlock.

It's a challenge for sure and the gun is great, a straight shooter, and I guarantee my misses are all due to operator error. I'm hell on a couple life size steel knockdown squirrel targets out to 50 yards but I whiffed all my chances on live ones so far this year. I took it out a couple weeks ago and had 2 foxes squirrels at 60 yards feeding their way to me. I was sitting up against a tree with the rifle across my lap and when I went to adjust so I could get in position to take a shot, they bolted. I didn't see another squirrel for the rest of the hunt but that's just how spooky they are this time of year. I hunt a mix of public and private, all of which is wide open hardwoods so they know you're there as soon as you walk in. They really only come down to feed first thing in the morning and real quick right before dark. The rest of the day they are den'd up keeping warm. I have had some luck with spooking them out of there holes and up into the tree but that's so few are far between I cant rely on it. With it being so tough I'll stick to the 17 through the tournaments and by then I should have a freezer full so I'll go back to the .32. My daughter is 3 and I make dinosaur squirrel nuggets for her so keeping a few in the freezer all winter is my main goal.

I miss 3 to 4 times for every one I hit. I still giggle like a kid looking at a ladies lingerie catalog though. My kids ate a lot of "bbq" sammiches when they were little 🤣

Well now. Wife went to the mail box and came back with a surprise in a package.

Thanks so much, Snakebit (Tom). I’ll no doubt put it to use. I’ve already learned how to make it sound like the bark of a gray squirrel and the bark of a fox squirrel.

This thing is going to be a great squirrel locator.

LOL, my daughter is 41 now and she tells my wife that she still has flashbacks from when she was young and opened up the fridge and seeing a bunch of cut up squirrels in there. She said she knew what was going to be on the menu for the next couple of days.

I still don't get it.

So she did her happy dance in front of the fridge?! 🤣

My pleasure buddy👍. When you said you had never seen or used a call, I knew I had an extra one and could remedy that. Just don't drive Mama crazy making calls or she might take a road trip and punch me in the nose🤣 I drive every body crazy with turkey calls in the spring.
