2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

You'll have to scroll back a number of pages, but I believe it was ETipp talking about hunting squirrels in the Rockies. He said they taste good. I had a buddy from Wyoming who said the piny squirrels he shot tasted like turpentine to him. Shoot a few and report back to us, please. Inquiring minds want to know.

The pine squirrels I ate tasted good. Close to TN gray squirrels that I was accustom to eating at the time. However, they were killed above 9,000 FT MSL. My guess is, much of it has to do with altitude and how they were prepared. I most always soak most all small game in saltwater over night in the fridge. I believe back then I used to soak squirrels in vinegar and saltwater.

Anyone use a dog for squirrels. How's that go?

I just Google that. They have them.

I have done so. Its a neat thing to do if one has a good squirrel dog. Some dogs are naturals, such as mountain cur dogs. Sometimes old hound dogs will tree squirrels fairly well. That's what I had.

From the information I have obtained, good squirrel dogs are often difficult to train. It can take a lot of work. If you check on YouTube you will find some videos of squirrel hunting with dogs. Due to losing most of my prime squirrel hunting grounds, I've actually been considering getting a squirrel dog. It very well could be the best route to take during late season when squirrels are not out and about as much and difficult when its difficult to find them.

Of course squirrel hunting with dogs is to be done during the late fall and/or winter months after the leaves have fallen.

I plan on going out Monday when squirrel season reopens in PA. I’ve been getting reports from my son’s family about the black squirrel sightings on their property during deer season. We didn’t have black squirrels where I am from in Ohio (recently moved to PA) so I sure would like to get a black one in my sight.

Anyone hunting them in the mountains? I mean western mountains. Curious if the Aberts squirrels are any good eating? I only know one guy that said he tried eating one & it tasted like a pine tree… yuck! I’m looking forward to getting out with the .32 for some rabbits & squirrels. They can be pretty sporadic in the high country. Plenty of walking and very little shooting.

I don't know about eating an Aberts squirrel but I know of a couple of fellas that would love to have one to mount.

I plan on heading back out in the morning after some bushy tails. It's been a long week at work and I'm ready to get back out in the woods. I can go back to my 35gr powder load, now that I'm done with deer. Deer season is still in here for another week. So I might end up aggravating some hunters who are still after them, but that's public ground and I try to avoid them if I can.

Kansas firearm deer season ends Sunday so it should be safer to get back out into the eastern Kansas woods and bother the squirrels. I have my in-aptly named Traditions Deerhunter 32 ready for some trekking in wooded areas.

If I get a chance I’ll take one & cook it up and let you know if it tastes any good! Turpentine doesn’t sound too good, lol!

Soak them overnight in salt water or vinegar and saltwater. If you have a small pressure cooker pot put them in there about 10-15 minutes first then fry in oil. If you do not put them into a small pressure cooker, fry very, very slow for a long time. You can bread them first as well.

We’re going to Michigan for Christmas. If we have room in my wife’s car, I’ll take hunting gear and try and get a black squirrel.

If I’m fortunate to get one, I’ll post a picture minus rifle as it’ll be an unmentionable.

I figured all the side talk was because none of us were getting out. Looking forward to getting Little Ann back out and taking her for a woods walk. Tomorrow is the last day of rifle deer season in Maryland, but late muzzleloader for deer starts on the 21st. I’ll likely go out a few days as I’m a teacher and off, but it’ll be one of them newfangled ones that we don’t talk about. Still trying to get a sidelock rifle. I did go out today for a managed hunt at a state park, but it was shotgun only. Got a nice little 6 point. First deer ever. I’m quite happy, even if I lost style points.

Trigger It's fun for the both of us.
He's one heck of a squirrel dog. If he's barking under a tree ya bet your pay check there is a squirrel in that tree. If he's sitting there quietly and looking up scanning the tree tops and give you that look and starts quivering there's a squirrel in that tree.
He has treed more squirrels than than I shot, I believe he frustrated at me when I miss.

I'm not a squirrel hunting dog trainer, or did I grow up hunting squirrels with a dog. Henry took to it on his own. We saved him from a not so good life. We took him to stop what was about to happen that night... Plan were to give him to my wife's friend. After have him for just shy of 2 weeks I saw some unique traits in the boy. Treeing squirrels was one of them. After seeing him do this in the backyard doing this, I took the little fella through the woods to the Slough area. He was a sniffing track fool. He treed a few squirrels in a short time. I was amazed. After a good walk together, we went back to the house. First thing I Sato my wife was,"Myrtle, have called Melody, about this dog?" She replied, "No, I sorry, I'll call her tomorrow." I said "Forget it, this dog is not going anywhere!" She smiled and "Oh, good I was hoping to keep him"

Now back to hunting squirrels with a Designer Breed??? What the H&&& is that? He is not a common squirrel hunting breed, Like a Mullins Feist, Cajun Squirrel Dog, Carolina Cur or Mountain Cur, He is an Aussie Doddle.
I belive he prefers Slough Dog or just plan ol Mutt.

There are times he sits and holds them in place and others he'll move around the tree. Eyes never losing sight of the squirrel. Then it's up to me.

There are times I go out back and hunt squirrels solo There's been a few times I've shot a squirrel, watch it hit the ground. Keep my eyes on that spot, making my way through sometimes thick under growth. After reaching the spot I could not find the squirrel.
First time that happened I knew I hit the squirrel. Trusty Crockett Rifle. He crawled off, I looked and couldn't find him, I thought Henry will find him. Came home git the boy. Took him to the spot and his nose went to work. He found him about 10 to 12 feet away. The squirrel made his way to a cluster of vines right at the base. Crawled in there where I didn't see him. Ole Henry found though.

Him and I, will make it out back this Sunday and give them @@@@.

CVA double barrel Brittany .410 loaded with #6 shot.

I really enjoy hunting squirrels with a muzzleloader and my whether it be PRB or shotgun, or .58 Smoothbore.

A good dog is a good dog. No matter high dollar breed or one that adopts some humans. They can be hard to come by too!
