Sometimes other breeds & mutts, will make fine squirrelers, for sure.
If you do a search on best rated squirrel dogs, you will be surprised at what you will find.

I tried to view the link JimK posted but it will not play for me. So, I used the title to do a net search and it pulled up. I do not know if that is a Cur dog because of the white, but it appears to be one, or perhaps a Cur/Terrier mix.

I don't think "squirrel dog" means it's the size of the squirrel. 🤣

The little schweenie dog that I posted a video above just had her 10th birthday. Her eyes are failing and she's definitely a sight hunter but she misses a lot nowadays. In her younger days she has caught a couple squirrels and killed them. Also a few birds. But, even in her prime she was too small to navigate in the woods.

My 3rd German pointer.

He use to sit in the window waiting for Squirrel to get in the yard. Smart dog.
Watched him get that tail right off one or two.

He caught mice in the house. Good at it.. that was a little loud at night around the house.

It's funny seeing the GSP in the window go all shaking when the Squirrel show up. Then it's off like a rocket the table chair and things go flying. All day the dog did that.

We once owned a redbone that would tree squirrels, opossums & raccoon.. The only problem with her was it might be a 1/2 mile walk before she sat down to tree another squirrel...
My uncle had the prettiest matched pair of small runt-sized redbone hounds you ever saw, brother & sister, perfect duplicate red dogs, chop mouthed yippers, pure pleasure to hear and see them work a tree with a squirrel in it. LOL the squirrel didnt know what to do, would whip around like on a merry go round. You had to be quick when you shot the squirrel cause if they got it first they'd tear it to smithereens.

Like you say, if they came across a racoon or deer scent BOOM off they'd go like bats out of hades and you might not see them again till dark 😄

I would like to get after one of those Sikas one day. No meaning to be off topic. Just thinking out loud. And you say those are Delmarva Fox Squirrels? Are they only in that that area of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia?

Daytime

Crisis averted!

In prep for going hunting soon I decided to refill all of my powder tubes. I had them all laid out on a table and would only reach way over to grab one at a time. I had refilled about 7out of 12 of them and put the tops on, then I thought to do my usual check. So, I picked up each one of them to see about how much powder was in each tube. That's when I found one tube I had refilled that the powder level was way up there, and I do mean way up there. Instantly I knew what had happened.

That one tube must have been from when I was deer hunting with my .54 GPR. I use 90 grains of 3F. However, what I had done, and due to a label that had most of the tube covered, not only did it contain 90 grains, but I also charged it with another 20 grains. So, that would have been a 110 grain charge in Mr. Crockett, if I hadn't caught it while reloading. Me thinks Mr. C would have gotten a little indigestion on that one.
