Thad, can you bait those wild hogs?

Yes, they can be taken with any method, 24 hours a day year round. I haven’t been deliberately baiting them cause they already eat all the extra deer feed I put out this time of year. They are moving through about every 4 to 6 days, hanging around a couple of nights, then the cycle starts again. So far I’ve either been out there a night early or a night late! But they are really tearing things up. Maybe if I can figure out how to mount my thermal scope on my .54 Woodsrunner I could get back to some BP shooting!

Good question, snakebit. Will the smaller calibers bark a squirrel?

Speaking of barking, I would like to hear from someone in here who has actually barked a squirrel and killed it. Not heard about it, not "my grandpappy said he saw it done", etc.

I've heard and read about it all my life, but never met anyone that actually pulled it off. Is it a legend, or is it for real? Inquiring minds want to know.

Watched my grandad do it when I was a kid. He used an unmentionable revolver. It was an oak tree.

I was going to try to bark a couple of squirrels with my Crockett but I had a change of heart. My luck it would throw some chunks of bark into the squirrels eyes and they would run off blind.

Yep, I used to (emphasize used to) do it a lot with rim fires. My pappy taught me and said that’s how he learned to shoot squirrels to save meat (brains) back when times were actually hard. However, in most places we hunted later on, we preferred shotguns for safety reasons.

I’ve never done it with a muzzleloader and round ball since I prefer a Fusil de Chasse with shot for the same reasons we used shotguns. But a .22 caliber bullet placed right between the head and tree limb works every time. If you put one between the tree and the squirrels chest, you may have a little work to do when he hits the ground.
