Several tornados on ground near: Cullman , Addison, ... South of us; staying vigilant
Got pretty rough for a half hour or so up here in Pulaski earlier this afternoon. Seemed like it was gonna camp out over our place for a while but then, all at once, it just went away. Had to run out in the middle of it because it blew the doors open on my wife's kitchen out by my work shop. Trees were twisting and bending and, within a minute or two, I was soaked to the bone. Then, once I got those doors pushed to and barricaded the weather just stopped. Felt kinda like Devine intervention. Looks like another one on the way though.

Well, it’s still too dark to see outside this morning and to check for storm damage but we made through the night anyway. Huge amounts of rainfall since yesterday and last night with more on the way today. Flash flood warnings out now. I reckon that’s one of the very few advantages of living on top of the highest place in the largest county in the state. If it floods up here, someone best build an ark.

Wowser!!!

Just a couple of minutes ago I tried my new rangefinder out during very low light conditions. It was so dark out that I could barely see the trees with my naked eyes.

I’m pleasantly surprised to find that not only was I able to see the trees as clear as can be, but the RF worked flawlessly on ranging. The red LED readout is not too bright to distort anything. A black readout would have been impossible to see.

Oh boy, am I ever going to love this thing. It will make it so easy to slip into a known squirrel activity area during late season, after the leaves have fallen, set up and range a few nearby trees when it’s still so dark that trees are barely visible to the eye. Of course, that equates to less movement after daylight. This thing is like looking through a high quality rifle scope.

After much research, what I have listed is a couple of reasons why the decision was made to pay more for a RF. For my style of early morning squirrel hunting during late season, those attributes are necessary.

Super excited and very impressed! This ole boy is getting there, fellas. Slowly but surely I’m building up my squirrel getting do-dads for the upcoming season. A couple more and I’ll be set.

LRF = a good tool for sharpening your skills for more accurate targeting, and therefore more humane, squirrel harvests.

Ed, Do you have a chronograph? Do you know what your muzzle velocity is for your prefered load?

I do have one but it is not accurate so I never use it.

Considering the shots taken on squirrels will be fairly close up, as long as I establish maximum minute of squirrel groups for each squirrel tool, that’s all I’ll be needing. If it’s beyond that, not taking a chance shot.

Now that my vision is finally behaving like it should, next step is such specific maximum distance target shooting and/or hold over amount. My guess is, for Mr Crockett, the groups will open up too much past 30-35 yards, but we shall see.

Had me worried there. Thought you might have to call it "The Waffle Butt" ! 😵‍💫
The legend of waffle butt...

There's fear in the hearts of squirrels throughout the Kentucky hills

when ol' waffle butt comes to display his skills

With Mr. Crockett in his hands
No squirrel is safe throughout the lands

Taking a break right now. Had to stretch. Windy as heck today.
No bird yesterday. What a crazy morning. Friday wife and I did some scouting, lot of signs, tracks, dusting areas in the sand, feathers and poop.
First response from a gobbler was on our way out we stopped at a bridge going across Moccasin Slough, you could say it's a small river or a big creek. Took a few cast for a bass. Out of nowhere a Tom busted loose. I toyed with him for a few minutes. Said this is the morning spot. We left with a good feeling and high hopes.
He was on the east side of the Slough in 50 to 75 yards at my best guess. Saturday morning I parked the vehicle on the west side of the Slough, walked over the bridge about 75 yards, set at a big Magnolia tree, with some downed limbs, nice natural blind. Still dark but getting close to daylight. Just sitting there I heard a gobble, nothing before that, no owls, Egrets, or Sandhill Cranes. I thought ok good here we go. I sat there a minute or so longer. The owls stated hooting and laughing. The Tom responded everything. So I started in with my slate call. He was in deeper than the day before, once I started calling he was moving closer. That's when I realized that he was on the other side of the Slough. Damn it man! He was coming in hot and rather quick. I forgot to mention that the wife's leg was giving her the blues so she stayed in the vehicle. A few minutes of the Tom not calling back I thought we'll he found some hens. Also a couple other hunters were on both sides of me. One guys attempt to call was very poor sounding. I thought maybe that spooked the Tom.
I gave a good strike on the slate and he answered back. He was close, he was on the road on the other side of the bridge.
My wife got a hell of a show my blood was pumping. My wife tried to call me. I did have my phone on vibration and in my vest pocket. The bird was going crazy. I was about to try and sneaking up on him. Then I heard a shot come from the same side of the bridge I was on further away. At that time I grabbed my phone, saw that my wife tried 5 times to call me. She could talked me right up to that Tom, while he was Struting right in front of her.
Just way it works for me. Here's some pictures of the bird I called in....

Ya, gotta love it, I recon🤔
