By modern ammunition I thought he meant Conicals...

Na I got it. Was just mashing your taters a little bit. Besides we all know Conicals and modern ammo are just fads. I don't think they will catch on.
The .36 killed A LOT of men. It was considered very capable in that role. The .44 was designed to kill Horses.
I don’t understand all the hand wringing about using a .36 launched from a rifle to kill deer at reasonable ranges.
Muzzleloaders don’t kill with “energy”, they kill by punching holes in things, and the .36 round ball correctly applied to the side of a deer will do just that.
I love my .58’s and .62’s…but having killed lots of stuff with them and my .40’s…I really don’t see much difference in the way deer-sized game reacts. We have Magnumized ourselves into thinking that unless you dump atom-splitting levels of energy into a whitetail deer it just won’t die.
If it will reliably kill a man, it will work on a deer.

I am one of those fortunate souls that has a set of T-C Maxi-Ball mold blocks. I have not used them yet. They were in a box of miscellaneous muzzleloader stuff the widow of a good friend of mine sold to me cheap after he died. I didn’t even know the mold blocks were in the box until I went thru it 3 years or so later. Nice surprise!
