1200yards was never even mentioned by the author of this thread.
It was only mentioned by a confused contributor.
The author however has also shot at 1200yards IIRC and if you research his contributions here you will find that excellent account.
No one, to add, said it was done with a spherical ball.

I have asked for his data to make the shot and all he responded was "about 1400fps"

4" group at 500 yards is quite nice especially for open sights and "about 1400fps". I spend quite a bit of time on a range similar with modern unmentionables and absent the bench rest bolt guns few are shooting at that level.

Yes I am sure match black powder guns can achieve accuracy like this but he is claiming stock mass production gun and that doesn't pass the sniff test at 500 yards

I think the problem here is he is looking at ball performance as you alluded to not conical bullets? There is a huge difference in B.C.! A ball has a huge amount of drag compared to a bullet. I hate to see actions like this when a question may have explained how the physics works to eliminate a lot of drag.

Dan - it looks like you've made some assumptions that aren't true. New isn't always better. I can certainly understand your disbelief, but perhaps you should check out some of Lewis' other posts. I also get the idea you don't shoot black powder?

Get a spotting scope. It is also a good idea to have someone be your spotter.

Most impressive shooting, especially with a factory rifle with the 28" long barrel with 1/48" twist rifling. I never would have believed that the 1/48" twist rifling could be accurate at such distances, especially with such a short barrel like that.

Considering the lack of mechanical and metallurgical quality of the flintlocks they made, the over all was probably the same for the entire line..

Wind flags really help on long shots. Years ago someone recommended that Hunters us coloured surveyor plastic ribbon tape to mark their trail going into and out of the woods. kind of a foolish idea as the woods look like a tassel that of a little girls trike with ribbons everywhere. I have found that in order not to get lost in the woods, that just having something basic, like leaving one of these every hundred yards/meters is very effective. they do tend to jump around a bit when its zero degrees outside, I supose its either to keep warm or they are trained to do that.

Most TC barrels were not rifled or crowned uniformly enough for such accuracy. My TC Hawken had one groove that was barely a scratch and the flint locks were not worth manure.

And lets see a ten shot group..

TC went through a period of time later years with not so great barrels. I have an early TC. 50 caliber and a later 54 TC. The earlier barrel is just like everything else. Went to pot in later years.

One of the ranges I attend has a life-size mountain goat target out abou 400 yd. When we have m/l matches there, most of us take a couple of cracks at it. On dry days, when I can see the shotfall, I usually manage to hit it about 1 in 5. I usually pick an aiming point about 5 target heights above to start, and adjust when I see the dust. I got lucky one time, and hit it with the first shot (Said 'That's how it's done." Grabbed my stuff and went back to camp.)

Was this with conical or PRB?

First off, it’s hard for me to respond to a fella like you that Posts your Patched Roundball Data/Chart for reference in a Long Range BULLET Thread, That right there shows just how little you actually know about Muzzleloading, ANYONE that knows much about Muzzleloading Knows that a Patched Roundball FALLS out of the Sky rather Quickly, A Bullet on the other hand keeps Chugging along

My “About 1400 Fps” answer is for this 500 yard Renegade thread, as i have NOT Chronographed this particular load, But as much as i do this stuff i can say 1400 Fps is gonna be really Close. As for my 1,200 Yard Load, My 610 Grain Bullet is traveling 1,350 Fps, Powder charge is 100 Grains by WEIGHT of Swiss 2F Powder, I have Chronographed this Load. As for the BC of the Bullet, I don’t know? Nor do i care. The 610 Grain Bullet is .500 Diameter, and measures 1.320 Long.

What would you say to these Guy’s, using Cast Bullets like mine (They are shooting .45s, Mine is a .50) They are using Blackpowder, and Peep sights, They are shooting 1 Mile here, That is 1,760 Yards. This Shoot is called the ”Wasserburger Mile” it can easily be found with a Simple internet Search

Hmmmm. My TC Flinters seem to work just fine here in Nebraska. Must be an altitude difference.
Strange that TC flintlocks are more in demand and bring a higher price in PA than most areas of the country.
Yes I know about their special seasons.
